I am happy that the BJP has released a video clip of the launch of NPR in 2010.

Please listen to the video. We were enumerating the "usual residents" of the country. The emphasis is on residency not citizenship.
Every usual resident was to be enumerated irrespective of his or her religion or place of birth.
The NPR aided the preparation of the Census of 2011.

There was no mention of NRC.
The BJP-led government has a larger and more sinister agenda and that is why the NPR approved by them yesterday is very dangerous and different in terms of the TEXT as well as the CONTEXT of NPR 2010.
If the BJP's motives are bonafide, let the Government unconditionally state that they support the NPR form and design of 2010 and have no intention of linking it to the controversial NRC.

Does Mr Modi read anything at all?

Does he know that the charge against Mr Rajiv Gandhi was thrown out by the High Court, Delhi as "completely baseless?".

Mr Amit Shah says Congress can't keep India safe.

Who kept the country safe in the three wars fought in 1947, 1965 and 1971?
The country was safe before anyone had even heard of Mr Modi or Mr Shah. That is because we have a professional Army, Air Force and Navy.
What is the meaning of keeping India safe if different sections of the people -- women, Dalits, SCs, STs, minorities, academics, writers, journalists etc -- are unsafe?

The National Population Register (NPR) is a Register of usual residents of the country.

NPR is being prepared at the local (Village/sub-Town), sub-District, District, State and National level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

The objective of the NPR is to create a comprehensive identity database of every usual resident in the country. The data for National Population Register was collected in 2010 along-with the house-listing phase of Census of India 2011.

We don’t need Amit Shah to tell us whether or not NPR will lead to the NRC/NRIC.

It’s there in the rules notified by the Vajpayee govt in 2003. This is the law of the land. Read it for yourself.

To understand NPR, we need to understand wars & migration. The idea NPR came after the war with kargil in 1999. Where pakistanis entered India in civil clothes and we couldn't identify them. #IndiaAgainstCAA #IndiaAgainstNRC
So after the kargil war, there was conference of all chief ministers on internal security on 17-11-2001. This is where the idea of Multi Purpose National Identity Card was proposed and the idea of National Population Registrar was born to identify citizens from aliens.
Then the office of the registrar general of India framed rules on how this will be done, the idea of bio-metrics to be collected was formulated as early as 2003. So #Aadhaar was not the first time private sector use of id or biometrics was thought of. They wanted 16 parameters
