The 2nd volume of @Ram_Guha's biography of Gandhi is a fine work spanning 1000 pages

But it's amazing Guha almost entirely sidesteps the Moplah Rebellion in his work (v brief mention in pages 149, 173)

One of Gandhi's greatest failures totally ignored in a massive biography!
@Ram_Guha The Moplah rebellion was directly a consequence of Mahatma's Khilafat movement

The number of civilian casualties is estimated to be at least 10K, and maybe as high as 20K

Guha doesn't even mention this! All he cites is the 2K casualties on the Moplah side!
@Ram_Guha This is a bit like authoring a multi-volume work on Churchill, and mentioning the "Dardanelles campaign" (Churchill's greatest failure) very briefly in a couple of pages!

Such a problematic and also somewhat nasty thought

We cannot assume an iron tradeoff between the inculcation of intellectual virtues and the sustenance of moral virtues

Civilization will need to be frozen if you regard the tradeoff as being unsurmountable
Getting out and seeing the world challenges your priors, and moral assumptions

The challenge is in preserving your moral compass (which is an outcome of centuries of tradition) while at the same time engaging with the world in all its variegated forms

A challenge to both sexes
Retaining one's virtue after witnessing the numerous temptations of modernity is something more admirable than being "virtuous" on account of pure ignorance and lack of availability of choices in a sequestered village

This guy is reacting to the term "eternal servitude" in isolation without understanding the specific Shri-Vaishnava context of the sketch
That term would likely have been used by the illustrator even if the subject in question had not been Andal but any of the other dozen male Alwars
For instance one of the 12 Alwars is the illustrious "Vipra Narayana", also known as "Thondaradippodi Alwar"

He was a male brAhmaNa, but his devotion to Vishnu earned him the epithet "Thondaradippodi" which means -

"Dust at the feet of the lord narAyaNa"

This is puerile

Too many people on the H-Right think of "conservative" as a bad word

Much of Dharma stems from an instinct to "conserve". Even its etymology is linked to "sustenance / holding"

Dharmic codes emphasize sustainability as opposed to merely sounding fair/just
Having said that there have always been streaks of radicalism in Indian thought

Radicalism in Religion. In social outlook

Usually these have emerged in opposition to brahminical thinking

But sometimes even within brahminical fold
E.g. Ramanuja's views were somewhat radical relative to the prevailing Vedantic climate of his day.

Though we don't use the term "radical" to describe either him or his sampradAya today

Ram Guha's recent article is bad, don't read it, and if you've read it don't bother quote tweeting it to critique it

One point though, the fellow doesn't know what basic terms mean. Will just comment on the last bit where he asks communists to become 'democratic socialists'
Thing is, these are two different socialist lines with different praxis, and one cannot opportunistically become the other. That is not how politics work. I have no problems with actual democratic socialists (by which it is generally meant electoral democratic socialists)
He probably has no idea what communism means, or how difficult it is internally to reconcile even two similar lines. Let alone wholesale abandon them. Can be done, but the way he cavalierly writes that without caveats it is probable he doesn't know what he is talking about

DOJ policy says you can’t indict a sitting POTUS—that’s policy, not law—there is no Constitutional prohibition.
