“We had already been painting canvases on a small scale before the pandemic hit, and the objective was not to sell them. But we realised that the proceeds from selling these canvases could help a lot of members of the trans community.

Especially those who are not economically sound enough to sustain during the pandemic”,said Poornima.

I applaud the provincial and federal governments for decriminalizing personal possession of drugs in BC.

The BC Coroners Death Review Panel made it clear that #decriminalization is needed in order to ensure that people can access services without stigma. 1/ #bcpoli #cdnpoli
But this announcement comes with a caveat.

BC requested a limit for personal possession of 4.5 g, but the federal government only approved a limit of 2.5g.

Health experts and advocates argued for a higher threshold, based on data and evidence. 2/ #bcpoli #decriminalization
The intent of #Decriminalization is to reduce stigma, but when possession limits are low, it can result in higher potency of drugs, potentially causing more harm and a fear of seeking help. 3/ #bcpoli #EndTheStigma #safesupply

From August 2017 to July 2021, over 6,000 people died from our toxic illicit drug market.

6,000 British Columbians who could still be here today if the political will to save them existed.

Why has the @jjhorgan’s gov’t not introduced non-medicalized #safesupply? 1/ #bcpoli
For the past 6 years, our province has been in a public health emergency in which the toxic illicit drug supply has taken more lives than homicide, suicide, and car crashes combined.

These deaths are preventable. The policy tools are there but we haven't used them. 2/ #bcpoli
Current drug policy frameworks are rooted in prohibition, criminalization, and marginalization, and they are simply not working.

These archaic policies worsen the stigma that this gov’t has said it wants to reduce. 3/ #bcpoli #safesupply #EndtheStigma

When someone mentions “Peer Pressure” we tend to think of being offered drugs or alcohol as a teen.

But that’s a massive oversimplification of the multiple forms of #PeerPressure, direct & indirect, and how it can affect us as adults, specifically with regards to #SubstanceAbuse
Peer Pressure exists our entire lives, and it isn’t as simple as D.A.R.E. makes it seem.

With Substance Abuse Disorder, peer pressure can be the onset, perpetuate use, or cause a relapse. And it’s typically not someone “making” you; we react to social situations subconsciously.
One way in which peer pressure can contribute is via “Modeling Behavior.”

When we feel left out by not doing the same thing as everyone else, we can “feel” the pressure to partake. For example, a recovering alcoholic may feel the need to drink at a happy hour or a party.

Being HIV positive will soon no longer be a barrier for serving in the armed forces, it has been announced on #WorldAIDSDay.

Let’s dive into the specifics of this very overdue step towards eradicating HIV & AIDS stigma…

trib.al/OuqMIAC
People with HIV are currently not able to join the armed forces, and anyone diagnosed while serving is no longer deemed ‘fully fit’ and banned from certain operations 🙃
But from today, those who do not have HIV but are taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication to protect themselves against infection will be able to join and serve with no restrictions.

Looking forward to giving the keynote address at this morning’s launch of the @SeeChangeIRL 9th annual #GreenRibbonIRL #EndTheStigma campaign.

The theme of this year’s campaign is Exclusion - a topic very close to my heart as minister with responsibility for social inclusion.
With every campaign & with every #GreenribbonIRL worn publicly there are increased chances to #EndTheStigma of mental illness & start conversations. With this campaign there is more opportunity than ever to really turn around how we think and talk about mental illness.
We have all now shared a mentally & emotionally traumatic experience of living through a pandemic. Obviously that trauma different for everyone, but I believe that in 1 way or another everyone has had a traumatic experience in the past 18 months simply by living through pandemic.

Okay, time for a serious tweet. Today (September 10) was #WorldSuicidePreventionDay and so I want to re-up two threads (one is inside the other) sharing a few highlights of my mental health journey. This has been a really difficult time for so many.
Since both threads (from May '20 and June '18), I've had setbacks and struggles. I say that because mental health isn't something that simply ends and disappears. It's something you constantly work at and anything (or anyone) can send you back #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
My DMs are open and I'm always willing to talk, in part because often times I didn't feel like (and knew) I had people in my corner or at least ones that was educated about, could grapple with, and/or understand mental health. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay

Let's breakdown this myth that depression means doing nothing. This was one of the worst depression weekends I've had in a long time and here's a list of what I did (thread):
Thursday night: 8hrs organizing

Friday: 17hrs cleaning & organizing

Saturday: 14hrs filming & editing video, posting video, responding to emails, drafting board documents, paying bills, invoicing

Sunday: Going for a walk with parents, filming & editing video, laundry, workout
Depression hits different for everyone.

Today, I participated in a med school's day on mental illness. I found myself indescribably moved hearing another panelist's story abt her sister who died by suicide. "Some people ask me if I am angry at my sister...How could I ever be? I'm sad that she suffered so much" A THREAD
Suicide is highly personal and very sensitive. The darkest moment in my life was the day I decided to kill myself 5 years ago. That day, I entered a horrible spiral of hating myself becuz I was going to hurt everyone I loved. Hating myself only made me want to kill myself more.
I made it through that suicide attempt but I hated myself for being willing to hurt everyone I loved. Coming back from that suicide attempt was the hardest thing that I'd ever done in my life. My depression was actually worse after surviving: my body was alive, my soul was not.

We've come a long way to #EndTheStigma around mental health but there's so much work to do. Particularly when it comes to access to services. We keep saying we treat mental illness like any other disease, but the resources available tell a different story. #BellLetsTalk thread:
When I had a serious depressive episode in my early 20s, my GP was my only option. He was retiring and happy to write a prescription. Meanwhile, I still had no idea what he wanted to treat me for. Depression and anxiety weren't real to me.
Things got worse. I had test after test because I assumed there was something "physically" wrong with me. I wasn't crazy, right?
But tests were negative. And I couldn't function. I lost 40 pounds in a few months. To say my family was worried is an understatement.

Instead of using #BellLetsTalk and #EndTheStigma to talk about mental health awareness, we should be using it to talk about solutions.

Medically necessary therapies...actually getting people the help that they need. There's a solution. Let's rock the helix. /1
@kahnkidz' argument re: consistent application of standards as it pertains to education in ontario so that Each Belongs (the HWCDSB slogan, and something they're about). There's a solution.
@MyVoteCounts5' argument for supports for disabilities. There's a solution. /2
@kahnkidz @MyVoteCounts5 Bill 64 (Noah and Gregory's Law). There's a solution.
@JulieMDPanneton's arguments re: psychotherapy and other therapies. There's a solution.

Rather than talking about awareness, let's be about supporting solutions that address these issues. #BellLetsTalk #endTheStigma /3 /END

Understand this
ALL over the world Autistics are being
attacked,
bullied,
silenced,
burned,
threatened,
beaten,
restrained,
locked up,
heavily medicated,
electrically shocked,
manipulated,
drowned
and pushed to suicide.
ALL IN THE NAME OF "HELPING"
Autistics are being prosecuted for who we are.
We don't even have to do anything wrong, existing is enough.
We are already seen as a danger,
a nuisance
and damaged beyond repair.

This is because of Autism Speaks.

This is because of the anti vax cult.

This is because of ABA.
#ActuallyAutistic are still not being heard.
Listening to our words is not enough.

Hear our needs.
Hear our fears
Hear the traumas we have already faced.
AND BELIEVE US.
