Today, I participated in a med school's day on mental illness. I found myself indescribably moved hearing another panelist's story abt her sister who died by suicide. "Some people ask me if I am angry at my sister...How could I ever be? I'm sad that she suffered so much" A THREAD
Suicide is highly personal and very sensitive. The darkest moment in my life was the day I decided to kill myself 5 years ago. That day, I entered a horrible spiral of hating myself becuz I was going to hurt everyone I loved. Hating myself only made me want to kill myself more.
I made it through that suicide attempt but I hated myself for being willing to hurt everyone I loved. Coming back from that suicide attempt was the hardest thing that I'd ever done in my life. My depression was actually worse after surviving: my body was alive, my soul was not.

Read sad story last night about Dr. Bucci, 50 year old Phychology & Brain Sciences Dept. Chairman, at Dartmouth that committed #Suicide 11 months after a lawsuit was filed by graduate #students in his department. He
2/ was NOT accused of sexual misconduct, but named in the suit for knowing about the professors’ inappropriate behavior as the Chair.I share many of the same feelings he expressed to friends and colleagues in his emails before he took his own life like: the case was deeply
3/ personal; reputation had been damaged; physical health diminished; false portrayal of his actions; being blamed unfairly; allegations & process “unfair”; how can they ever undo what they did to me & #wronglyaccused. Similarly, how I had reported the #disability

We've come a long way to #EndTheStigma around mental health but there's so much work to do. Particularly when it comes to access to services. We keep saying we treat mental illness like any other disease, but the resources available tell a different story. #BellLetsTalk thread:
When I had a serious depressive episode in my early 20s, my GP was my only option. He was retiring and happy to write a prescription. Meanwhile, I still had no idea what he wanted to treat me for. Depression and anxiety weren't real to me.
Things got worse. I had test after test because I assumed there was something "physically" wrong with me. I wasn't crazy, right?
But tests were negative. And I couldn't function. I lost 40 pounds in a few months. To say my family was worried is an understatement.

Instead of using #BellLetsTalk and #EndTheStigma to talk about mental health awareness, we should be using it to talk about solutions.

Medically necessary therapies...actually getting people the help that they need. There's a solution. Let's rock the helix. /1
@kahnkidz' argument re: consistent application of standards as it pertains to education in ontario so that Each Belongs (the HWCDSB slogan, and something they're about). There's a solution.
@MyVoteCounts5' argument for supports for disabilities. There's a solution. /2
@kahnkidz @MyVoteCounts5 Bill 64 (Noah and Gregory's Law). There's a solution.
@JulieMDPanneton's arguments re: psychotherapy and other therapies. There's a solution.

Rather than talking about awareness, let's be about supporting solutions that address these issues. #BellLetsTalk #endTheStigma /3 /END

Let's talk about it. @MissyElliott @llcoolj @kimcoles @iamKrayzieBone @ebenet and @missfree helped save my life. I literally thank God for these people.

When my mental was collapsing & I was at the bottom, genuine people reached out to lift me up. I vowed to help others.
2020 needs to be a year of maturity, empathy and love for everyone. Let's leave all the hate & childish shit behind, and confront the fact that there's a real problem with the stigmatization of mental illness.

Let's all raise our voices against stigma.
Please seek help if you need it.

It's time to #EndTheStigma. Read on for my personal story.
1 in 5 people will experience a diagnosable mental illness of some sort in 2020. 1 in 4 will have one at some point during their lifetimes.

For some, mental illness is a single episode at a particularly difficult point in time. For others, it is a lifelong burden.

*tags random*
Bipolar disorder affects ~2% of our society. It's characterized by marked fluctuations in mood, from high (mania) to low (depression). Some people become psychotic if the mood episodes are severe enough. But that doesn't make them scary.

Understand this
ALL over the world Autistics are being
locked up,
heavily medicated,
electrically shocked,
and pushed to suicide.
Autistics are being prosecuted for who we are.
We don't even have to do anything wrong, existing is enough.
We are already seen as a danger,
a nuisance
and damaged beyond repair.

This is because of Autism Speaks.

This is because of the anti vax cult.

This is because of ABA.
#ActuallyAutistic are still not being heard.
Listening to our words is not enough.

Hear our needs.
Hear our fears
Hear the traumas we have already faced.

Today’s #SchizoChat is all about antipsychotics. What are they, why are they useful, how are they controversial, and what do you need to know about them? #schizophrenia #schizoaffective #psychiatry
Before I begin, a quick word: this can be a very controversial topic, as we will delve in later. All folks’ opinions are valid (especially their personal experiences!) so don’t be mean! These drugs can really impact lives for the good or bad. #SchizoChat
Folks’ opinions can be very split—check out this recent poll! At the time of tweeting, the results are all over the place! Controversial! #SchizoChat

#Resistance family: I pretty much dropped off of twitter for a couple weeks, dealing with personal shit and trying to check my rage and restlessness with the status quo. And, of course, everything is worse now, and in a couple more weeks, it will be even more worse. 1/
I'm tired. Of the fact that this Administration continues to defile our country with impunity. Tired of racists (becoming more emboldened by the day). Tired of cops getting away with (literally) murder. Tired of human beings being locked in cages like animals. 2/
I'm tired of the fact that brown Americans are made to feel as though they're not Americans (even those born here). It makes me tired that, as each day brings us closer to school starting, my stomach ties into knots, thinking about what could happen to my children there, 3/

I'm stressed, discouraged and feel really down today. But giving up is never an option.
Didn't want to turn this into a Thread, but couldn't resist. Each day I wake up is a fight for our country, causing extreme battles with depression. America is in chaos and I'll be the first black man to step up and admit, Donald Trump is ruining a huge part of my mental health.
The physiological effects of the Trump administration aren't good. A growing body of research has tracked the detrimental impacts of Trump-related stress on broad segments of the American population, from young adults to women, to racial and LGBT communities.

It's #BellLetsTalk and for so many who struggle with #mentalhealth concerns, this day raises awareness and builds a culture of #compassion. Let's never again hear someone say, “just snap out of it” or “it’s all in your head.” @Bell_LetsTalk
Each of us may have different levels of understanding when it comes to #mentalhealth. Mental health is neutral. It’s not bad or good. It’s not necessarily positive or negative. It just is. #BellLetsTalk
A tooth ache will put you in the dentist’s chair. The flu is a reason to see the doctor. There’s no shame. Seeking help for #mentalhealth support must also be a safe experience. There's simply no other choice when your mental health is cast in shadow. #BellLetsTalk #EndTheStigma

Borderline Personality Disorder aka Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder is one of the most misunderstood, stigmatised & complex mental health diagnoses (Thread) #BPD #EUPD
One could write pages relating to the condition BPD and a layman’s understanding would still be incomplete. For this reason I am going to try and keep it short, simple and concise as I can and explain to you what BPD is to me.
BPD is intense feelings of loneliness & an inability to sit with myself without resorting to poor coping behaviours #BPD #EUPD #MentalHealthAwareness
