Bushfires and rainwater tanks:

For people living *outside* bushfire-affected areas reporting that drinking water from their rainwater tank tastes of smoke; smoke taint alone is unlikely to be unhealthy. If concerned about the taste, use bottled water for drinking.

For people *in* bushfire-affected areas where water retardant and water bombing has occurred or ash has fallen, your tank drinking water could be contaminated. If water tastes, looks or smells unusual, don't drink it or use for food prep, teeth brushing, pets or livestock.

Boiling water doesn't remove fire retardant or other chemicals. Water can still be used for irrigation, toilet flushing and firefighting / home protection. Water testing is not necessary. See: betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthy…
