In 2019, a population of Booroolong #frogs was rescued & translocated to Taronga for temporary holding in light of devastating impacts on its environment following prolonged drought & approaching Black Summer #bushfires zooaquarium.org.au/public/Public/… #SavingOurSpecies #ScienceWeek Image
Time was of the essence! These #frogs live only 3-4 years & were all adults on arrival at Taronga. These critical but ageing founders possess unique genes necessary for their species to adapt and survive in an ever-changing environment. Image
Cryopreserving sperm can be stored indefinitely, and so we can ensure that the #GeneticDiversity of wild populations is retained by helping these precious males produce offspring. Look at the frog sperm here!

"The Dry" could have been just another murder mystery film, but what made it interesting was how it weaved in the #ecological crisis in #Australia - #bushfires & #droughts - with the social crisis in #rural farming communities & small towns.
The swirling dust devils, the dried up #rivers & creeks, correlates with a societal collapse. The washing of a car with waste #water, the red crud that emerges out of shower heads, all narrating how a #rain starved society has hit its #ecological limit.
It is also about the decline of the farming community in #Australia. A telling comment in the film - an old #farmer worrying about how his #land will be tilled after he is gone: "Farms with no people. Imagine that. No need for towns. No need for any of us."

BREAKING: New report reveals that #Facebook is systematically spreading #climatedenial across its platform bit.ly/fbclimatemisin….

Please read and share the report, but THREAD 🧵 of findings below (1/9)
(2/9) Our 40-page review summarises over 100 academic studies, empirical reports and journalistic investigations. It finds that Facebook has been failing on all fronts when it comes to preventing #climatemisinformation
(3/9) Total disclosure - this was initially an internal document that we were never planning on publishing. But once we put all the evidence together, it felt overwhelming, and that we had a duty to release it to the public.

So what are Facebook doing? Or not doing?

Australia Exposed! Let's face it, tweeples, Australia has proved beyond doubt that we are a Racist, Homophobic, Elitist & Bigotted society! We have @ScottMorrisonMP as #PM, a self-centered,delusional #Pentacostal_Evangelist with many examples of his fit to my claim!
Then we have example after example of the obvious racism shown to #Australians of #Asian heritage, the ongoing bias & injustice we deliver to our #Indigenous_First_Nation people. Our failure to accept that we are all #Human, deserving of equal treatment, legally & socially!
Perhaps I should have added #Mysoginistic to my first tweet, because that fact is also clearly obvious! We have deluded ourselves, over decades, that we are a welcoming, caring, inclusive, kind & generous society, but the events of the past 12 months have shown that to be a myth!

THREAD on today's #ABS #GDP report, confirming Australia's 30-year recession-free streak is over. GDP shrank 0.3% in the March quarter (and will fall much more than that in the June quarter). So that marks the official start of a recession...2 @CntrFutureWork @unionsaustralia
Remember: the COVID lockdowns started just in the last 10 days of the March quarter. So they could not have impacted quarterly averages much. Rather, the seeds of this recession were planted long before #COVID19 hit our shores...3
The biggest drag contributing to lower GDP was a 1.1% fall in consumer spending: worst since 1986, 3rd worst on record. That wasn't due to COVID19: in fact, panic buying in March *boosted* retail sales. Lower consumer spending was due more to the #bushfires...4

Scott Morrison’s Deputy PM today in the @australian whines that “it really annoys me that I think states have been let off the hook largely this summer”. Here’s a few things that annoy me, about the recent bushfires...
@australian It really annoys me that, as we learned at Senate #estimates this week, Scott Morrison was warned “on multiple occasions” about the risk the bushfires posed, but he did nothing.
@australian It really annoys me that, for four years before the bushfires, Scott Morrison ignored pleas for more funding for water bombing. smh.com.au/politics/feder…

Over the last 12 months, @isabellasaund and I have had the privilege of working with @socprogress to develop Australia's first Social Progress Index. amplify.csi.edu.au/social-progres… @CSIsocialimpact
@isabellasaund @socprogress @CSIsocialimpact Why measure #socialprogress? We live in a country that prioritises economic growth and #GDP over pretty much everything else. The logic goes that if economic progress increases, so should social progress.
@isabellasaund @socprogress @CSIsocialimpact But we know that's not the case - we know that the mining boom, while contributing to 28 years of unprecedented economic growth, has also had ongoing impacts on communities and the environment where mining companies have now left.

The scientific evidence connecting climate change to this year’s fires is straightforward. #AustralianBushfiresDisaster reuters.com/article/us-cli…
#Bushfires are a natural part of the Australian landscape, but according to @BOM_au “there has been a long-term increase in extreme fire weather, and in the length of the fire season, across large parts of Australia”.
The “fire weather” – hot, dry, windy conditions that bolster fires – the country is experiencing this season is especially intense.

This morning I’ve been reviewing our back catalogue of articles about #disaster #grantmaking & it seems we already know a lot about how to give #grants & other #funding in the wake of a crisis like the #bushfires - a thread for grantmakers & other institutional funders:
Following the 2004 tsunami, we searched for international best practice and interviewed a range of local folk about how to do disaster grantmaking better. We cautioned grantmakers not to rush in, but to pause and see how they could help fill gaps later.
We interviewed orgs like @PhilanthropyAus and philanthropy experts like @mliffman. Michael Liffman told us that amidst the emotion & frenzy of giving, professional grantmakers should take a sober approach.

Did Scott Morrison & @LiberalAus illegally use images of uniformed Australian Defence Forces in a party political ad?
I have only been able to find ADF rules about ADF members, but indications are that I am on the right track.

@LiberalAus Was it illegal for @ScottMorrisonMP & @LiberalAus to use the ADF for political campaign purposes?
I think so. Please see above tweet.
That ad was not an Aus govt announcement but a campaign ad authorised by #ScottyFomMarketing .

@LiberalAus @ScottMorrisonMP I remember some years ago, a politician was in big trouble for a campaign ad that included a person in ADF uniform. #Auspol, can you help here?

It is a legal requirement in Australia to include an authorisation on all video messages used on social media by Australian MPs. The video message simply communicates the Government’s policy decisions and the actions the Government is undertaking to the public.
The same practice is rightly employed by the Leader of the Opposition and the Labor Party. This is required and standard practice in Australia.

Heavy-hearted, I checked the German-speaking news again.
They are slamming how @ScottMorrisonMP is handling the situation & climate policies.
These are very clear words

@ScottMorrisonMP Spiegel

- Fireworks despite bushfires
- PM misjudging the seriousness of situation
- fireworks a perfidious signal
- in Sydney celebrate as if 'it was nothing'
@ScottMorrisonMP taz (Tageszeitung, Berlin)

- birds falling out of the sky
- growing resentment against PM in the population
- people traumatised, stunned
- nothing but patriotic platitudes from PM

55 years ago Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin...

Gough Whitlam, the Australian Prime Minister, was touring Syracuse, Sicily at the time and flew to Darwin upon hearing of the disaster.
The Aus government began a mass evacuation by road and air; all of the Defence Force personnel throughout Australia, along with the entire Royal Australian Air Force's fleet of transport planes, were recalled from holiday leave and deployed to evacuate civilians from Darwin
Thirteen ships of the Royal Australian Navy were used to transport supplies to the area as part of Operation Navy Help Darwin; the largest humanitarian or disaster relief operation ever performed by the Navy.
