RIGHT NOW. Sitting in court. Over a dozen Black & Brown men too poor to pay bail shackled. Hauled from Rikers. Yet just 1 week into NY bail reform to make system a bit fairer, police, prosecutors, & lawmakers have the gall to cave to the @nypost & call for a return to even worse.
NOW: With my client. Young man charged w/ violent felony. Released since August. Tho reforms only ended bail for misdemeanors/nonviolent felonies, most my clients w violent felonies have long been released. He was here in court 1st thing this morning. In a suit. With his fiancé.
Client charged w/ robbery lost his hard won job within a day of arrest. He’s trying desperately to find work. And like the vast majority of people, has not (& data shows will not) rearrested while released. Not “dangerous.” Bail reform doesn’t touch ppl charged w violent felonies

I represented the man who this ex-NYPD detective lied into a violent felony indictment. Michael Bergman completely fabricated a fake crime out of spite. If convicted, would’ve faced minimum 3.5 years in prison. Max 15. Today, the liar only got probation.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-c…
I remember first meeting Mr. Barbosa. In interview cells attached to the cage behind the arraignment courtroom in Brooklyn criminal court. Like everyone I represent I don’t get to choose. I just happened to be working that day, & a file with his name & charges was handed to me.
The charges were serious. Detective Bergman claimed that after stopping Mr. Barbosa’s car, he accelerated backwards at a high rate of speed, then turned the car toward the Detective. Was right in between headlines. And slammed on gas. Bergman dove out of the way to save his life.

They can’t stand exposure of hate crime hoaxes because it makes it harder to politically exploit violence against LGBT people. The 26 killed trans people in 2018 were not all killed for being trans. This is important. I will go through each one-by-one.
Christa Leigh Steele-Knudslien, who produced various transsexual pageants in the New England area, was allegedly killed by her husband. There is no evidence this was a bias-motivated murder. masslive.com/news/2018/01/h…

1/ People who are framing this moment in history as a “test” of #Metoo are missing a number of fundamental points about the nature of the movement itself, its broader societal impact, &, indeed, how the modern GOP reacts to sexual assault.
2/ #MeToo isn’t being tested. It is showing its strength.

So many of us are not only unified in our outrage, we are talking about sexual assault more openly, & w/ more nuance, than ever before.

We are empowering one another.
3/ This isn’t a test of the #MeToo movement. It is the next stage.

If *anything* is being tested here, it is the GOP & its reaction to both the allegations & our outrage, as well as the party’s nefarious relationship w/ the issue of sexual assault.

I lived in France for quite a while when I was younger. Experienced CONSTANT street harassment. So, my first thought in response to this was, AWESOME!!!!! Then I wondered about the implications. And my first concern was that this could disproportionately affect black & brown men.
And no, I am not saying that black & brown men are responsible for most street harassment in France. That's why I said "disproportionate." Nor am I saying this law is bad. Which is why I said my first response was, "AWESOME!"

I'm just curious/concerned about the implications.
Street harassment is a real problem in France. So is racism. When I lived in France, and I complained of sexual harassment/abuse/assault, a common response I received was, "Oh that's just the North Africans."

It was not.
