It is *fascinating* to me that, having had the idea that they could do this with a computer, the WSJ would go through on doing it.
“Why?”

Because seeing someone in a stipple portrait once persuasively suggested that they had been featured in the WSJ, a status of esteem for some people.

And they just wrecked that for all future profiles *and all previous ones.*
I’m not opposed to dynamiting status hierarchies in principle, but I’m extremely surprised that the WSJ would choose to do it over a feature that probably 1% of their readership will use.
