I didn’t expect anything different from fans, or the sports media, but for the “serious” media and particularly individuals and outlets that trumpeted their #metoo coverage to not only ignore Kobe’s rape victim but to suspend a reporter who dared share coverage of it—SHAME.
There is never “an appropriate time” to mention that a famous and talented man is credibly accused or rape, because the true answer is that those same gatekeepers and fans swept it under the rug back then and every day since.
Here is the article that the @washingtonpost reporter shared that led to her suspension. I share it occasionally, as recently as last week, when the hagiography kicks up. Make sure you get to his admission and testimony of nurse who performed rape kit thedailybeast.com/kobe-bryants-d…
@washingtonpost Thank you to @vicenews' @AlbertBurneko who wrote a piece that is honest: vice.com/en_us/article/…
@washingtonpost @vicenews @AlbertBurneko Kobe's victim is somebody's daughter too.

There are plenty of real heroes out there. Some of them are even really great at sports. Celebrate them.
@washingtonpost @vicenews @AlbertBurneko Evidently much of the newsroom is fine with @feliciasonmez tweeting "off her beat"
@washingtonpost @vicenews @AlbertBurneko @feliciasonmez In light of how @PostBaron and masthead handled @feliciasonmez, worth rereading this piece by @irin, h/t @rtraister

I seem to remember Catholic reporters under @PostBaron being allowed to cover priest sexual abuse.
@PostBaron This is a good piece. Maybe, since it's a conversation among men and sports fanatics, people will listen. slate.com/culture/2020/0…
Imagine the barriers that @washingtonpost reporters trying to gain the trust of sexual assault victims will now face—when many of the biggest stories of the day (including the President) are in part/in whole about sexual violence.
Calling a rapist “complicated” is the #thoughtsandprayers of sexual violence. @AlbertBurneko did a real service today writing about how language like this is used to whitewash vice.com/en_us/article/…
.@nprpolitics this morning interviews sports journalists who say Kobe is “complicated” (x8) figure who “evolved” (x3,), a real “Title IX dad.” How many days must elapse before we hear from survivors about how this moment is affecting them?
@nprpolitics Good lord. Now the WaPo admits that @feliciasonmez did NOT violate any social media rules but still goes out of their way to call her tweets "ill-timed." Again, it was just fan service, giving into the mob:
@nprpolitics @feliciasonmez To review: they punished a sexual assault victim for sharing a clip about a famous rape case. Then when called on that, they called her dissemination of public information "ill-timed." No apology for their treatment of her; reminder she had to flee her house due to threats.
@nprpolitics @feliciasonmez The caved to enraged fans, demeaned their reporter, and sent a message that you shouldn't share facts in a breaking news environment. That's just grand.
@nprpolitics @feliciasonmez They also hung a target on the back of every reporter re asymetrical mob attacks. In 2020. In an election year.
