South Georgia legislator Jason Shaw was appointed to PSC by Gov. Nathan Deal on his way out. Up for election in 2020, Shaw's done nothing to earn Georgians' votes He needs to be replaced by consumer-friendly Dem who lives in District 1-roughly Columbus-Savannah & points south

Black History Month is in February because of Lincoln’s and Frederick Douglass’s (chosen) birthday being Feb 12 & 14. “Negro History Week” was first organized around those dates, before expanding to Black History Month in the 70s...
I just mention that because every year I hear people saying “why February?”
Carter G Woodson made the official declaration of Negro History Week in 1926, but Black teachers had been organizing Black history celebrations and programs in February (and other times as well) for years prior.

Black History Month begins today. For this leap year, I will highlight some of the enslaved individuals who labored at the University of Alabama. The project was inspired by a Georgetown University initiative and derives from archival research began in January 2015.
University of Alabama Collections used include: Early Administrative Records, Faculty Minutes, Basil Manly Diaries, Landon Garland Letterbooks, the Corollas and two UA paid subscriptions (Ancestry.com and Newspapers.com).
Why does Black History Month matter in 2020? We still need to continue Woodson's charge of countering the historical propaganda promoted against people of African descent. Education. Being present. Speaking the truth remains necessary.

When Ann was a young single mother in the 1960s, struggling to make ends meet, Howard Fuller from Operation Breakthrough recruited her to come to a community meeting & learn what was possible if people organized. He helped her get her rental property repaired...
Ann ended up attending a 17-week Community Action Technician training & becoming director of organizing for Durham’s United Oganizations for Neighborhood Improvement. If people connect & speak up for one another, she said, we can all have what we need.
