It wasn't (just?) to "prove" Dems could "walk and chew gum" at the same time. It was to clear the deck, so they could revert to conflict avoidance after impeachmemt, leaving nothing for critics to point to as potential sources of leverage.
Defund OAG until Barr cooperates is something that might actually happen if Dems hadn't fully funded the government through September while Trump was trying to nullify the impeachment power.
Anyhow, Republicans are literally investigating Hunter Biden with more urgency and fervor than Dems are investigating the biggest crisis in the modern history of DOJ or anything else.
A lot can happen in six weeks.
One of the easily foreseeable and foreseen consequences of narrow, fast impeachment is that it would end and leave Trump unbridled. But while Democrats were on investigative war footing, Trump's predatory instincts were largely held in check.
That's why this is all happening now, as opposed to during the inquiry or trial. Trump is highly predatory, but part of being a predator is sensing threat and engaging in self-preservation.
It was a big error not to remain on that war footing for months, rooting through the full extent of Trump's corruption. The good news is it may not be too late. The bad news is House Democrats have apparently decided not to try to fix it.
