cant help but feel that excessive personal nostalgia and excessive cultural nostalgia are part of the same phenomenon that is ultimately some type of mental virus that should be resisted
been thinking a lot about nostalgia over the last few months and i have come to the conclusion (im sure other people have realized this) that the digital past being so close all the time in the exact same state as it was when it was present is, basically, fucking people up
i can, right now, think of any game or show from my childhood and pull it up on my phone instantly and its right there, boom, exactly how it was back then. its exactly the same right there. seems like having cultural artifacts from the past always on recall like this is dangerous
its at least extremely experimental. am slowly coming to the conclusion that this experiment is ultimately turning out to be a disaster + must have some relationship to the appeal of retro-futurism, the appeal of previously imagined futures, peoples general "damaged" feeling etc
this feeling obviously transcends individual people + has infected the culture at large. i guess thats obvious but im seeing how the micro individual person feeling this ties into the large scale cultural feeling. "vaporwave", hauntology, mark fisher etc
