I spent the last few weeks going through police shooting data from 12 cities, including Fort Worth, to answer the question many had after #AtatianaJefferson became the 6th person since July to be killed by a FW officer. Here's what I found.…
1. Compared to 11 cities of similar size, Fort Worth police shoot and kill no more often than those other police departments. They fell in the middle for total fatal shootings, and just above average for total shootings, both nonfatal and fatal.
2. When considering population, however, Fort Worth police had the second-highest fatal police shooting rate per 100,000 people in 2019, and the third-highest such rate in 2018.

In today's @nytopinion, I wrote about the police killing of a Black woman in Texas named #AtatianaJefferson. If you have time, you should read it. And if it activates you, you should visit our #SayHerName webpage: 1/13
Almost 5 years ago, over 25,000 protesters surged through the streets for Millions March NYC, an anti-police brutality demonstration fueled in part by grand jury decisions not to indict police officers for the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. 2/13
What’s less known is that #SayHerName, a campaign to elevate the names of Black women, girls and femmes killed by police, also emerged from that moment. These names remain obscure--like India Beaty, Shelly Frey, Jessica Williams--even today. 3/13

Should @AndrewYang worry about reaching & SECURING the Black Vote? #YangGang

@AndrewYang Thread 1: Pandering Vs Meaningful Policy

In 2020..Politicians must spend more effort talking to us not at us..".that candidates’ efforts to engage black communities often focus more on symbolic gestures than MEANINGFUL interactions." #BlacksForYang…
@AndrewYang What I really want the #YangGangFamily to understand ...ANYONE specifically talking to us about our own issues different to yours is NOT PANDERING...It's pandering when it's all about style (sounding cool, playing hiphop, photo ops etc..) and ZERO fake interest.

In response to police terror, Black voters nationwide are withdrawing their support from candidates who are endorsed by the FOP. Any candidate (Democrat or Republican) who is endorsed by the FOP will NOT be getting our vote.
@adoscolumbus @AdosOhio @rolandsmartin @RealTimBlack @DocMellyMel @BLMLA @DMVBlackLives @BLMSacramento @ColsUnderground @ColumbusFreeP In Ohio, Elizabeth Brown (daughter of Democratic senator Sherrod Brown) is running for the Columbus City Council. She is endorsed by the FOP. Liz will not be getting our vote.
@adoscolumbus @AdosOhio @rolandsmartin @RealTimBlack @DocMellyMel @BLMLA @DMVBlackLives @BLMSacramento @ColsUnderground @ColumbusFreeP An endorsement from the FOP is a sign of extreme disrespect to many in the Black community because the FOP (police unions) continuously protect bad cops who murder innocent Black people.

Y'all know I had to make a reaction video to the #DemocraticDebate for those who missed it. #KamalaHarris shut it down by standing in her truth as a Black woman aiming to make history. It was epic! My thoughts on that &more. #DemDebate #Kamala #Kamala2020 #KamalaHarris2020 #KHive
My earlier tweet about #OperationBlockTheBlackWoman low key blew up but I said what I said. Here are my thoughts on that plus the extra hurdles #KamalaHarris has to clear. #DemDebate #DemocraticDebate #Kamala2020 #KamalaHarris2020
Somebody tap Tulsi and tell her that Assad and Putin are the enemy not the Black Patriots like #MaxineWaters and #AlGreen that called for Trump's impeachment. Thoughts on her tiny violin act plus Steyer and Beto. #DemDebate #DemocraticDebate

Live-tweeting the #DemocraticDebate.

Just distracted by gunfire and police cars and now helicopters I can hear from my window in what appears to be a nearby Brooklyn neighborhood.

(I'm downtown and very high up and can see and hear what's happening a few neighborhoods away.)
Biden definitely not prepared for the question about whether it was proper for his son to be doing business in the Ukraine WHILE he was vice-president.
Senator Senators looks great. Better than he has at past debates. Rested. #DemocraticDebate

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price says “absolutely nothing can justify” what happened in #AtatianaJefferson shooting, reiterating, “absolutely nothing.” She also speaks against the police department’s move to release pictures of her gun in the home, saying that was “irrelevant.”
The mayor says city leadership has already put into motion a plan to bring in “a third party panel of national experts” to investigate. “Mere words are not enough. We are taking action.”
Interim Forth Worth police chief says the officer resigned this morning, but would have been fired if he had not for violating the use of force policy, deescalation policy and for unprofessional conduct. He could face criminal charges.

Press conference thread about the shooting death of #AtatianaJefferson by a Fort Worth police office.

Mayor Betsy Price, interim chief Ed Kraus and City Manager David Cook will speak.
Mayor Price: We are all heartbroken today. Atiatiana was an amazing, smart woman who was unjustly taken from her family ... I cannot imagine anything worse and I am so sorry ... there is nothing that can justify what happened #AtatianaJefferson
Price apologizes to James Smith, who called non-emergency. She apologizes to #AtatianaJefferson's young nephew who was in the room when she was killed.

Black women’s lives matter. Black childhoods matter.

Policing exists in opposition to these truths, which we hold to be self evident.
This is state-sponsored terrorism. God forbid your front door not shut properly or your child not close it properly. God forbid. God forbid.

The police might shoot you. God forbid.
I recently had to call the police on someone at work, and it was terrifying. I spent 10 minutes in a potentially unsafe situation because I wasn’t sure whether calling the police made me more or less safe.

The family of Atatiana Jefferson sent @shaunking some additional pictures of her.

She was a star in her family. College grad, caregiver, and a kind generous soul. She didn't deserve this.

When will enough, finally be enough. #SurvivingAmericasPolice
The Fort Worth PD is following a familiar script -- kill an unarmed black person, and then try to justify it with irrelevant facts.

That's what we're witnessing with the #AtatianaJefferson murder. Just admit, police are programmed to kill black people. #SurvivingAmericasPolice
"There was nothing nefarious or illegal about owning a firearm and they presented, in nowhere that firearm was contributory towards the use of deadly force here."

This is one of the most controversial videos we've ever posted but if you have an open mind you'll know she speaks 100% truth.

It starts with indoctrination and education...
"The first modern human beings that evolved on this earth were Black women...& every human being on the face of the earth today has the memory of those Black women's genetic structure in their genes. We don't want to admit that, but that's the way it is..." - #JaneElliott

Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was a student at Xavier University of Louisiana. After a neighbor reported her open door, she was fatally shot by a Fort Worth police officer in her home. She‘d been playing video games with an 8-year-old nephew. #AtatianaJefferson…
The shooting of #AtatianaJefferson, a Black woman, by a white police officer during a wellness check was the seventh time since June 1 that a Fort Worth police officer has shot a civilian. Six of those people died. #txlege #BlackLivesMatter…
Fort Worth police said the officer fired after "perceiving a threat" without specifying what it was, and that entered they’d “located a firearm” in the home.

Reasons Black people have been murdered in 21st century America:

Praying, biking, driving, running, lying down, holding skittles, breathing, being home.

And while we're contemplating the injustice of #AtatianaJefferson's killing, think of #OscarGrant, shot in the back as he lay face down.

#PhilandoCastile, shot to death inside his car for NO reason.

Or #TamirRice, gunned down for holding a toy, which I describe in my book...
Think of #SandraBland, #EricGarner, #BothamJean.

Think of being Black and living in a nation where you're safe NOWHERE. Not at home. Not in church. Not on the street.

And where law enforcement can gun you down without consequences.

Botham Jean was eating ice cream in his apartment

Atatiana Jefferson was playing with her nephew in her house.

But all police saw was their blackness and that was threatening enough.

Police has never and will never mean safety for black people.
Somewhere in America, there is a Trump voter who will claim he’s being unjustly targeted by the justice system

but they won’t extend that same courtesy to #AtatianaJefferson who was assassinated in her home by police. #SayHerName
Democratic candidates should be thoughtful/smart enough during tomorrow’s debate to address the murder of #AtatianaJefferson

If campaign agendas 4 black ppl don’t address the systematic ways this country is killing & oppressing us, you’re not the candidate 4 me. #Election2020

Killing unarmed black women screaming "I'm pregnant," isn't enough. Now they just show up at your window.

A white Texas police officer shot & killed Atatiana Jefferson in her home while she was playing video games with her nephew. #SurvivingAmericasPolice
The cop was responding to a call for an “open structure” in Forth Worth at about 2:30 a.m. when he saw someone inside the home, standing near a window.

The officer, who was looking stupid in the backyard, then pulled out his gun, despite the fact that there was no threat.
“Put your hands up. Show me your hands!” the officer can be heard yelling in bodycam footage before firing through the window.

The resident, later identified as #AtatianaJefferson, 28 — was killed in the 3-second gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. #SurvivingAmericasPolice
