I was asked to write this and I was emotional and angry. Tired, really. But I wanted to share my thought process when writing these 750+ words about the proximity of premature death/racism in Dallas and in this country. THREAD. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20ā€¦
Iā€™m an artist & MC. I always think about ideas in song lyrics. No other song title conveys proximity to premature death better than 2Pacā€™s ā€œDeath Around The Cornerā€(especially since his best work, ME AGAINST THE WORLD, released when he was in prison):
I decided to start with Tupacā€™s words because, in his lyrics, he located how CLOSE death was in his lived experience. Racism has a way of making that easy for you. He understood a radical political framework, predicted his premature death in this country and was killed at 25.

Just got this email. Not sure if my writings/ appearances sparked it, or simply my existence as a black person. This is what we're fighting against. This is why people are rebelling across the nation. Stop pretending this mindset is rare and start realizing what's at stake
My colleagues in media, ESPECIALLY black women, get these emails every day. And phone calls, and letters. At least we get to respond on air, in print, online. The vast majority of black people subjected to verbal assault and wanton police and vigilante violence do not
Our pain pales in comparison to #BreonnaTaylor #GeorgeFloyd #AhmadArbery #BothamJean #AtatianaJefferson families. But let me be clear. This nation's inability to treat black people with basic decency and humanity doesn't change whether you are on the street in bed or on air

If your black friends take the time to talk to you about racism and educate you, APPRECIATE IT. It's not their damn job. You have Google. You can read. Relying on black people to explain racism and your white privilege does not make you an ally. Do your part. #Blacklivesmatter
Some ways to get started:
Read @austinchanning's book "I'm Still Here."
If you're a white Christian, I highly recommend "White Awake" by Daniel Hill.
Read "The New Jim Crow.." by Michelle Alexander to learn more about systemic racism and how entrenched it is in US history.
Read "Waking Up White" by Debbie Irving and "White Fragility.." by Robin Diangelo. Have the hard conversations with the white people around you.
There's a reason for #BLM and it's not new. It's easy to ignore things when they don't affect you, the 72%.

On Friday, my CEO mentioned #AhmaudArbrey by name in her weekly all-company video message. It meant the world to me. Has your workplace acknowledged Ahmaud? Hereā€™s why so few will & why they should reconsider that silence./1
78% of Black professionals say theyā€™ve experienced discrimination and/or fear that they or their loved ones will. Yet 38% feel that their workplaces deem it unacceptable to speak about these experiences./2 hbr.org/2017/07/peopleā€¦
This isnā€™t what ā€œbring your whole self to workā€ should look like. The lack of acknowledgement can feel deafening and contributes to low satisfaction & engagement and low commitment to the organization./3

#BreonnaTaylor, an EMT, & Kenneth Walker were asleep when cops from Louisville Metro Police Dept, stormed n2 her home, w/o identifying themselves. Walker fired, officers responded with a hail of bullets & killed Taylor after she was hit 8 times. atlantablackstar.com/2020/04/01/lawā€¦
This case sounds so much like the #AiyanaJones case. Another case where police busted into someoneā€™s house, in the middle of the night, not announcing it themselves. They killed 7yr old Aiyana as she lay in her bed & tackled her grandmother who had no idea what was going on.

I spent the last few weeks going through police shooting data from 12 cities, including Fort Worth, to answer the question many had after #AtatianaJefferson became the 6th person since July to be killed by a FW officer. Here's what I found. star-telegram.com/news/local/criā€¦
1. Compared to 11 cities of similar size, Fort Worth police shoot and kill no more often than those other police departments. They fell in the middle for total fatal shootings, and just above average for total shootings, both nonfatal and fatal.
2. When considering population, however, Fort Worth police had the second-highest fatal police shooting rate per 100,000 people in 2019, and the third-highest such rate in 2018.

In today's @nytopinion, I wrote about the police killing of a Black woman in Texas named #AtatianaJefferson. If you have time, you should read it. And if it activates you, you should visit our #SayHerName webpage: aapf.org/shn-campaign 1/13
Almost 5 years ago, over 25,000 protesters surged through the streets for Millions March NYC, an anti-police brutality demonstration fueled in part by grand jury decisions not to indict police officers for the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. 2/13
Whatā€™s less known is that #SayHerName, a campaign to elevate the names of Black women, girls and femmes killed by police, also emerged from that moment. These names remain obscure--like India Beaty, Shelly Frey, Jessica Williams--even today. 3/13

@AndrewYang Thread 1: Pandering Vs Meaningful Policy

In 2020..Politicians must spend more effort talking to us not at us..".that candidatesā€™ efforts to engage black communities often focus more on symbolic gestures than MEANINGFUL interactions." #BlacksForYang

@AndrewYang What I really want the #YangGangFamily to understand ...ANYONE specifically talking to us about our own issues different to yours is NOT PANDERING...It's pandering when it's all about style (sounding cool, playing hiphop, photo ops etc..) and ZERO SUBSTANCE..no fake interest.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price says ā€œabsolutely nothing can justifyā€ what happened in #AtatianaJefferson shooting, reiterating, ā€œabsolutely nothing.ā€ She also speaks against the police departmentā€™s move to release pictures of her gun in the home, saying that was ā€œirrelevant.ā€
The mayor says city leadership has already put into motion a plan to bring in ā€œa third party panel of national expertsā€ to investigate. ā€œMere words are not enough. We are taking action.ā€
Interim Forth Worth police chief says the officer resigned this morning, but would have been fired if he had not for violating the use of force policy, deescalation policy and for unprofessional conduct. He could face criminal charges.
