Just back from the Maujpur-Babarpur metro junction with my colleague @MariyamAlavi and cameraperson Sushil Rathi. It's one of the many flashpoints of the riots. Very volatile, very tense, pitched battles between rioters. Acute hostility to media by both sides. 1/n
@MariyamAlavi There is plenty of police/paramilitaries milling around, but the attempts to break up tviolence is sporadic. These are burnt bikes just outside the police chowki. 2/n
@MariyamAlavi As we moved towards the (largely Hindu) Vijay Park, one of the first things Mariyam and I saw was a young man with a head injury being carried out. 3/n
@MariyamAlavi This boy approached us, told us excitedly that a (Muslim) shop had been looted, and that we should go help ourselves. 4/n
@MariyamAlavi The shop, called Indian Sports, had been ransacked and set on fire moments ago. It sold medals and trophies for school events. A local activist attempted to put out the fire. 5/n
@MariyamAlavi Across the nullah from Vijay Park is the (largely Muslim) Kabir Nagar. Lots of people on the roofs, some of them throwing stones. 6/n
@MariyamAlavi We saw an RAF contingent and a SWAT team come and go. Mostly it was Delhi police. But they seemed outnumbered and (predictably) passive. 7/n
@MariyamAlavi This is just what we could film secretly on our phones. But what we saw and heard is far, far worse. Urgent need to vastly increase the presence of security forces, and to send in peacemakers: community leaders, MLAs, MPs - whoever can help douse the flames. -fin-
