Running anti-Muslim propaganda/misinformation is not limited to “North Korean Channels” or “Godi (lap) media” or nationalist journalists/anchors in India. A thread. 1/n
Let's talks about @NDTV- Indian liberals favourite channel - and a story they ran last week on its website: “ISIS-Linked Couple Had Plans Of Suicide Attack In Delhi: Police Sources"…
The story, based entirely on unnamed sources, was their top story for some time, and uncritically pushes a government narrative that weeks of peaceful protests against the CAA were a “jihadist conspiracy” [sic].

The Citizenship Amendment Act in #India has received much intl attention and generated heated debate and protests that provoked a police crackdown and rioting, including the recent #DelhiViolence that resulted in over 50 deaths. Why is the #CAA problematic?

A thread…
What is #CAA? It provides a fast track to Indian citizenship for specifically non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan already in India; removes the illegal migrant label for specified groups; and protects them from legal action in regard to citizenship.
The government argues the #CAA’s only purpose is to protect persecuted minorities in neighboring countries, a laudable goal in of itself (and a key reason my org @USCIRF was formed), and has no impact on Indian Muslims.…

Finally caught up w/ @iamjohnoliver’s episode on Modi last week. Clear, brilliant explanations about Gujarat - “when you are being asked about your role in the deaths of thoussnds, you simply don’t get to walk out of an interview”. Strategic quiet now returns. #DelhiViolence
Impressive research, Amit Shah’s heinous speeches, which Modi has not disavowed, & so well explained on Indian govt’s “diabolically clever two-step way” on #CAA_NRC_NPR , the new citizenship register plus Citizenship Amendment Bill -& the detention camps. This before last week.

“Whilst trade is...vital for our economy & future prosperity, this in no way compromises the UK commitment to holding #humanrights at the core of our foreign policy & I can guarantee we will not pursue trade to the exclusion of #humanrights”-@nadams #India…
Glad to see #DelhiViolence is not being ignored by MPs in Westminster: @TanDhesi. The Foreign Office junior minister @nadams says trade deals won’t be pursued at any cost. Will Britain be prepared to stand up for #humanrights and accountability in India?

#SupremeCourt declines to hear Harsh Mander today in his petition after SG Tushar Mehta adduces transcripts of his reported speech at #Jamia wherein he said there is no trust left in the courts & that ultimate justice has to be on the streets.

#CJI: We will sort this out first.
#SupremeCourt tells Mander's lawyer that if this is what he feels about the courts then it will have to be decided first whether he should be given a hearing at all.

A separate petition on #DelhiViolence to be heard now.
As advocate Karuna Nundy, appearing for Harsh Mander, seeks time to verify the alleged hate speech, SG Mehta says this is strange that he wants time for verifying his own speech but wants FIRs against everyone immediately.

SG says its apparent on the face of record that speeches are by both sides. “Lets not forget that these people are abusing these forums” adds SG
CJI asks if the situation is not “conducive” enough to file FIR’s.

SG says we must wait as inflammatory statements have been made by Mander as well.
CJI refuses to act upon allegations made by Mander. Tells Nundy that she has to first disprove claims of the Hate speeches made by Harsh Mander.

Supreme Court bench, led by CJI, is hearing a petition relating to Delhi Violence praying, inter alia, praying for registration of FIRs against BJP leaders Anurag Thakur & Kapil Mishra for alleged hate speeches.

Gonsalves takes the Bench through the Petition filed by the Riot Victims.

My #DelhiViolence understanding:
1. Who Protested - Mainly poor and lower class targeted muslims, staunch leftists, ppl with least knwledge of CAA/NRC,Wannabes.

2. Who instigated - Leftists,Political propagandists,Ppl with intentions of dividing the country in the name of religion
Paid news agencies who turned every stone possible to make sure this looks like Hindu-Muslim.

3. Who benefited - Political rivals, Goons who wanted to manipulate their own people (and succeeded too at some extent), Paid news Agencies as their TRP took a leap.
Who suffered and died - Innocent 'Indians' only.

This was no pogrom but a strategically designed propaganda to make sure that every move made in order to make India a better country is maligned and tarnished.

Delhi Riots: Supreme Court agrees to hear on Wednesday plea by activists led by Harsh Mander seeking immediate registration of FIRs against Kapil Mishra and Anurag Thakur.

Senior Counsel Colin Gonsalves mentioned the plea before the Bench headed by CJI SA Bobde against the decision of the Delhi High Court of deferring the matter till April.

Gonsalves tells the Court that the matter is urgent given that deaths are being caused daily
CJI Bobde says Court is not equipped to deal with such incidents.

"We are not saying people should die... We cannot stop things from happening... We can only deal with the situation after it occurs"

Court says it wishes for peace.

Matter to be heard on Wednesday

Horrific scenes described by doctors at a Delhi hospital in a riot-torn area that was flooded with patients amid deadly violence.

“We were crying as we treated them. For the rest of my life, I won't be able to shake those days from my mind."
Our report:…
Patients streamed in on people’s shoulders, some on wooden carts, a doctor said. "At one point we had to pull shutters down, because we couldn't take in more people. The brutality with which people had been beaten, it'll never leave me.”…
The four doctors at the 15-bed hospital didn't sleep day and night, as patients streamed in, their cries filling the air, and hundreds gathered outside. Ambulances didn't come until a court in a midnight hearing ordered police to allow them in, docs said.…

‘A policeman was killed, an intelligence officer was murdered & dumped in a drain. At least 38 people have died: shot, beaten, burned. At the Trump banquet, the Navy band played “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”’

The ‘Titanic-like’ detail in this hard-hitting piece by @Samanth_S.
Have I read this right? Delhi High Court now entertains petition against those calling out hate speech?

“The plan of this Urban Naxal group was to defame India, to paint India as Failed State & thus to bleed my Mother India internationally, economically..”…
An important comment from @PriyamvadaGopal for those reporting on the situation in Delhi. This isn’t an equal conflict but deeply rooted in the Indian government’s systematic approach towards its Muslim minority population that has triggered this.

@sighyush walked from Jaffrabad towards UP border last night & witnessed the madness that's taken over Delhi.
@sighyush At the Maujpur-Babarpur metro station, Hanuman Chalisa blared from speakers as men armed with sticks and rods stood by and chanted religious slogans. A senior CAPF officer, learning that we were from the media, told us to not meddle with this crowd. “Take the opposite road."
@sighyush In Babarpur, men of all ages congregated confidently outside bylanes, brandishing sticks and rods. Boys as young as 10, wielding rods, accompanied them. There were very few women.

Close to 40 injured in the #delhiviolence at LNJP hospital under @ArvindKejriwal led Delhi govt. Some faced acid attacks, head injuries, eye injuries. One bleeding since 2am. Timely treatment not available. Relatives stopped from seeking help from journalists/activists.
Most from Mustafabad. Disappointing attitude from the doctors, staff, supervisors. In denial. Not even acknowledging that there are riot victims at the hospital. Standard bureaucratic responses. Everything that @AamAadmiParty campaign against during elections. #DelhiViolence
