Jagan won. Naveen Patnaik won. Every single BJP dynast from Poonam Mahajan to Varun/Maneka Gandhi won. But.. 'dynasty is dead', 'new India' et al. Spare me the BS.
Dynastic politics is (sadly) alive and kicking. If anything the BJP is almost as dynastic as the Congress. (see here, for instance: scroll.in/article/918234…) So lazy, knee-jerk dynasty-bashing may play well on WA, but gets nowhere close to the complexities of realpolitik.
The only change from the past (and this is not the gift of the Modi-era) is that as voters become more discerning, dynasty alone cannot win you elections. You need to perform: either as an MP, MLA or party boss. Or you ride to power on the back of a wave.
The Congress loses not (solely) because of dynasty, but because the dynasts who head it perform poorly. This presents the party with 2 options: either the current lot get their act together (like, say, Stalin), or step aside and make way for someone who can perform.
(don't see the prospects of either, tbh) -- fin --
