My next door neighbor is elderly. He just flagged us down because he is sicker than he has ever been. He has no toilet paper or food. He looked like death and was crying. He can’t go to the doctor because his fever isn’t high enough. Although it is high.
He said he didn’t want to knock on our door cuz we have kids. We just moved so he didn’t have our number. He waited till he could catch us outside so now we are going to the store for him.
Moral of the story is check on your neighbors. Exchange numbers. We need community right now. Lots of Americans have never talked to their neighbors. It’s time to get rid of our rugged individualism even while we practice social distancing.
I should clarify a few things. When I say elderly I mean he’s older but he is not retired. I would guess he’s over 70 but unsure.

Also, for those saying call an ambulance. He is capable of that for sure if he wanted but he has talked to his doctor.
Idk how it’s worki everywhere else in the country but here in the Portland area they do not want people going to the doctors who are able to breathe normally or have fevers that aren’t too high or controllable. If it gets there he will go but they won’t take him now I know that.
Lastly, I am not an exceptional neighbor. I’m doing what I believe almost anyone would do. My point is what if he could not flag us down? Please check in with your neighbors and make sure you exchange numbers. It could be you that needs support soon. We need community.
I actually feel guilty I hadn’t done this already but we moved just over a week ago. Please, I implore you, even safely leave a note with your number if you can? We are doing that for the rest of our neighbors now. Who knows who else is sick and alone?!
This was shared and what we will be doing for our neighbors.
