1. It's time to talk about a national initiative for Healthy People and Communities. It can be big part of the stimulus. A big part of a Green New Deal.
2. After this initial period, we are going to have to retrofit huge parts of our infrastructure from airports & arenas to universities and schools & parks to inhibit secondary waves over say the next 12-18 months.
3. And, of course, we have to build more hospital capacity, more ICU beds, more masks & ventilators now & for future waves.
4. Public health - and civic and personal health generally - has always had a big impact on reshaping our cities (h/t: @UrbanAdler. Many of our key shifts to open space, building codes, parks & greening were in response to health & wellness issues in the late 19th & early 20th cs
5. We are going to have to retrofit airports, arenas & large scale civic infrastructure. Some of this is as simple as painting lines & circles for physical distancing. Others requite temperature screening.
6. Our parks and playgrounds: we need more and better open space. Equipped and designed for physical distancing.
7. We need physical distancing on our streets & sidewalks - wider sidewalks, better bike lanes, painted boundaries ...
7. Our colleges, dorms & dining halls. They may need to be redesigned & retrofitted too, if they are to reopen. Some of this may mean smaller, separated dining spaces.
8. I could go on ... And please do add to the list ... but the point is basic: We can use a mass mobilization & work effort to make our communities more resilient to this virus, future viruses & coming public health challenges.
