Many of you are in the throes of preparing to teach your energy courses online or homeschooling. Well, it turns out I’ve spent much of the last 7 years creating a variety of online energy literacy resources, the vast preponderance of which is FREE. [THREAD]
The primary collection of online educational content I created is Energy101. We made it for a MOOC that had 40k+ students globally. It covers energy basics, fuels, sectors, & cross-cutting topics. Here are 30 video lectures; they are dated, but FREE: youtube.com/playlist?list=…
We also made an online curriculum (w/embedded quizzes for tracking progress!) as an outgrowth of that course. It costs $75-95 & has been adopted at high schools and universities (Stanford, Duke, UMD, Colorado State, UT Austin, Princeton, and Penn State): energy101.com

For context, I'm a hotel refugee for a few weeks: I left France on short notice before flights were cancelled and made it to Austin to be close to family. But I can't move in my house for 3-5 weeks because there is a family living in it. Meanwhile, I'm staying at a major hotel...
....chain. This is a prominent hotel in the heart of one of America's hippest, fastest-growing cities. The SXSW cancellation and travel bans mean this hotel is at 5% occupancy. Just 20+ rooms out of ~400+ are occupied. They laid off the entire restaurant and bar staff...

I read this piece by @drvox w/ great interest. As always, his pieces are well-written & -researched. I thought I would provide a thread in response w/ some of my observations. And, yes, I realize that writing a 1500-word thread in response to a 4000-word article is OTT. [THREAD]
@drvox Yes, I will repeat some of the points made by @drvox and agree with almost everything he wrote. Two departures: 1) I think RNG can play a bigger role than he thinks, and 2) it’s a good thing for gas companies to be part of the solution.
@drvox For background, I serve as the Chief Science & Technology Officer at @ENGIEGroup so I run the corporate research program. We have one of the largest non-nuclear clean energy R&D programs in the world ($200M/yr, 900 people). Green gases are the largest part of the program I lead.

Big news: the CEO of @ENGIEgroup @isabelle_kocher will not have her contract renewed.

About two years ago she asked me to move to Paris & serve as ENGIE's Chief Science & Technology Officer. I agreed to do so because I was inspired by her vision & impressed by her leadership./1
@ENGIEgroup @isabelle_kocher It was as great decision and I am pleased to have joined her team.

She is one of the world's leading voices on the moral and business imperative of a low-carbon future. And she is an impressive woman: smart, tough, focused, sincere.

We need more CEOs who are as bold./2

She sold our dirty assets and invested aggressively into renewables and new business ventures.

My university just announced that we are shifting all courses #online for several weeks due to #coronavirus. I spent the last month on jury duty & as a result had to unexpectedly move my class online with no notice. I've got some thoughts (thread): #AcademicTwitter #CovidCampus
Before you do anything else, take a minute & look at your syllabus & course schedule. One of the things I realized was that in an online setting there were a number of topics that made more sense in a different order than in the face-to-face scenario I originally laid out. (2/16)
Whatever your course topic is, at some point, you are going to stare into that webcam & think about lecturing for an hour. Don't do it. If you do decide to record a video lecture keep it short. Like under 10 minutes - although the research says they should be even shorter. (3/16)

1/ That feeling when all the walls have closed in and are about to tumble down is not pleasant. I have been here before, three or four times in life perhaps.

But I was younger then and better able to withstand the pressures. I was more able and more willing to fight the fight.
2/ I have been driving for Lyft in their Express Drive program since June. It has been a bad experience that has slowly gotten worse and, recently, suddenly gotten much worse. I doubt it's a coincidence that this sudden dip coincides with my sharing my experiences here.
3/ I have struggled from the beginning with how to pay for gas and tolls while driving when I had no income to support such costs and with LYFT withholding all of my earnings until the weekly $275 rent was fully paid.

It's been a horrible cycle.

And it's almost broken me.

So, first there’s HB 1261, which establishes science-based, economy-wide GHG reduction targets for Colorado: 26% by 2025, 50% by 2030, and 90% by 2050 (from a 2005 baseline). Our state air regulators are tasked with developing implementing rules. 2/
Then there’s the “PUC Sunset” bill, SB 236. This one is big and has a lot of elements. Let’s hit the highlights. (It just passed today!) 3/

1/ @TampaElectric’s system is a great one for studying since they are 1. relatively transmission isolated in FL; 2. have ambitious plans for solar expansion, and 3. want to expand VREs at the lowest cost to customers.
2/ We looked at different types of system dispatch of PV plants (“must take” and “curtailable” are how most PV is typically operated today) and the findings are impressive.
