1/ Lance Gilman is wealthy, powerful, & well-connected in Nevada political circles. Sam Toll (@Storey_Teller) is just a guy with a blog, keeping up with Storey County political gymnastics & local happenings. Some time back, Toll had the nerve to report on Gilman's shenanigans...
2/ Gilman sued Toll for defamation. In seeking the identity of Toll's sources, Gilman argued Toll was NOT a journalist & therefore not entitled to the higher standard of proof that defamation plaintiffs must meet under Nevada's Reporter Shield Law.
3/ The trial court ordered Toll to reveal his sources. Toll appealed the discovery ruling to the Nevada Supreme Court, which in January handed down a unanimous ruling in favor of Toll.
4/ Kudos to the Nevada Press Association (@nevadapress), the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (@rcfp), the Online News Association @ONA), and Reporters Without Borders (@RSF_en) for their important amicus curiae briefs in support of Toll.
5/ The Nevada Supreme Court sent the case back to the trial court for further disposition in accordance with his ruling. The trial court this week issued a ruling that should just about conclude the case. thestoreyteller.online/2019/12/05/sup…
6/ Lance Gilman... does that name ring a bell? He's the brothel owner with a large commercial park in which $TSLA's Gigafactory is located.
7/ In the Nevada incentives deal, Gilman scored a new highway into his commercial park & lots of dough for the land that the State then gifted to Tesla. That deal is not working out so well for Nevada (or Panasonic). But it's all roses for Gilman.
8/ I'm sure Sam will keep us posted about what happens next. In a just ruling, the next ruling should extinguish Gilman's case. Sometimes the good guys win.
