DELHI WE HARDLY KNOW - a thread based on the book ' Delhi - City of Yoginis (amzn.to/2kR2bXS) '. Read it 10 years ago and again now. Sharing some snippets. You can read my earlier review here - anureviews.com/delhi-city-of-…

Delhi was once called Yoginipur, it is one of the 11 names of the city mentioned in scriptures. One Yogini temple survives in the city - Yogmaya Temple behind Qutub Minar - inditales.com/ancient-yogmay… Aurganzeb could not destroy it, he tried though.

There were two Devi temples in Purana Qila Complex - one dedicated to Kunti - the mother of Pandavas & second to Shitala Mata. Kunti Murti was stolen & Shitala Mata Temple one was demolished by ASI - inditales.com/in-and-around-…

Delhi was an important pilgrimage place on the banks of Yamuna. It had all other pilgrim places recreated within its limits. Kashi Vishwanath Temple used to be in Katra Neel near Khari Baoli inditales.com/aromas-of-khar… that had another Yogmaya temple.

Delhi was built in the shape of a Dhanush or a bow with the Yamuna in place of the string. Its length extended roughly from Nigambodh ghat to Surajkund inditales.com/surajkund-hist…
It even had its own Dashashwamedh Ghat where Ashwamedh Yagnas were performed.

Its the land of Indra, Indrani is both his wife and his weapon & she strikes things she does not like, like upper stories of Qutub Minar that have been repeatedly struck by lightning. Was there an Indrani temple? Any clue?

Pitripaksha in Delhi is called Kanagat, a distortion of Karnagat or descent of Karna, referring to the legend that he comes back on earth for Annadaan to Brahmins during this time.

Hilly area near Kalkaji temple was called 'Satiyon ki Yaad' probably when Chauhan women including Samyogita commited Sati after the attack of Ghauri. Nothing remains of it.

Aaranya Shasti (Jyestha Shukla Shasti) was celebrated as Vriksha Mahotsava in #Delhi. Others used to be Indra Mahotsava ( it was the land of Indra), Giri Mahotsava (for Aravalli) and Nadi Mahotsava (for Yamuna). Today there are a million festivals in #Delhi, but none of these.
Delhi had many Sun temples, Yamuna is the daughter of Chhaya - his wife, and Shani her son, whose many small temples continue to exist in the city of #Delhi. Shanidham has become big but most others just pop up on Saturdays.
Lal Kot - the original Red Fort of Delhi lies in ruins - inditales.com/lal-kot-delhi/ Wonder why no excavations, conservation, restoration agencies focus on this oldest fort in #Delhi.
@narendramodi 6 years of your being in #Delhi Lal Kot is still waiting.
A glimpse of the Gurpurab celebration in Chandni Chowk - that incidentally is the same day - Kartik Purnima also celebrated as Dev Deepawali & Tripurari Purnima.

Kalika Devi of #Delhi is also mentioned as Suryakoot Nivasini, referring to the hill it is on. Apparently, it is also mentioned at the entrance of the temple. The temple has 12 doors representing 12 Rashis and 12 Adityas.

Someone needs to study this. @ignca_delhi will you?
Some old names of #Delhi localities:
Katra Neel - Vidyapura
Shakarpur - Shakrapur ( after Shakra or Indra)
Okhla - from Kosala ( Ayodhya too is in Dhanush form)
Nigambodh Ghat - founded by Brihaspati
