Here's a thread about what it's like to #travel by air in India these days. First, you open up your preferred ticketing website, check for a decent fare and select it, only to find that there's a non-refundable 'convenience' fee to also be paid.
So you open up the airlines' own websites and compare the fares, and see that the sneaky gits also charge a similar fee, for reasons unknown. Thus you go with whichever website offers the lower overall fare. Tickets bought, you decide to check in online at the appropriate time.
Here, you discover that you have to pay extortionate prices to select a seat (even a middle one, sometimes), so you say "Fuck it, I'll check in at the airport." Then you book an Uber at surge pricing rates, and the guy cancels on you (but you get hit with a cancellation fee).

This is a truly terrible take that I know is widely shared. A thread...

1) Blaming influencers for influx of travelers is absurd. Travel has always existed in the realm of wish fulfillment. The fact that more people are traveling is a sign that more people are upwardly mobile.
2) Your "I want fewer people in Zion" think pieces are the same as #MAGA noise -- the toxic thinking of "it was better back before YOU showed up."

It's racist, ageist, ableist, gendered, & xenophobic.

Don't see it? Research the largest growing segments in the travel industry.
3) This exact same piece was written about the Lonely Planet in 1999. By me.

It's not about the platform, it's about the fact that many travelers aren't intrepid. They glom onto the same places, which people of influence -- writers, models, etc -- tell them are cool.

This is a thread about the most beautiful place I've been to in my life. It's a town called Gembu. It's located in Sardauna local government of Taraba state on the Mambilla plateau. The plateau has an average elevation of 1600 meters above sea level. So it's really cold!
On friday the 7th of June, we took a bus from Lagos to Jalingo with a transport company called Taraba express. If you're not a fan of long road trips, I'd recommend you make arrangements for a flight to Jalingo or a neighboring state. The journey was long! 24 hours in total.
When we got to Jalingo on Saturday, we decided not to take the trip to Gembu which was another 7 hours from Jalingo so we lodged in a hotel to rest and recharge for the next day. The next day we headed out to Gembu. Dday!! Had some tea and hit the road.

I read a great article on why the younger generation do not buy cars & apartments anymore & found it #TooGoodNotToShare

#WhyOwnWhenYouCanRent?

#SharedEconomy

Nowadays, the traditional measure of success-owning an apartment & or a car-is getting out of date
An increasing number of young people around the world don’t want to buy them.

#Research shows that the so-called #MillennialGeneration, who are now 30-35 years old, rarely buy houses and even more rarely — cars. In fact, they don’t buy super expensive things at all.
In the USA, people under the age of 35 are called ’the generation of renters.’

Why does this happen?

Some sociologists say the current generation of young people differs from their parents’ generation. They have other values.

I vetted a press release yesterday titled "Instagrammable Spots You Won’t Want to Miss in XYZ." This is problematic on so many levels. I wanted to throw my hands up in despair, cry, run away, throttle my inbox. Instead, let's break things down here. /1
There's been a lot of talk lately about whether Instragram is ruining the travel experience. In fact, 48% of Instagram’s 1 billion users say they rely on the social media platform to help find new destinations to travel to. /2
Instagram is an easy way to get eyes on a destination. We are bombarded with information that says Instagram - and Instagram influencers - should be part of your #marketing strategy. /3

We are back from a really awesome trip to #Taiwan. In hindsight, delighted that we picked Taiwan, instead of the more common places that Indians typically go to.

Noticed a lot of things that struck us as unique in this trip, so here is a compilation #PPinTaiwan (1/n)
(2/n) How did we choose Taiwan? @AirAsia was running a sale last August when Preethika noticed a good deal, and in a spur of the moment decision, we decided to go there. Yes, the flight tickets were bought 9 months ago. #PPinTaiwan
(3/n) Firstly, getting a visa to Taiwan is pretty easy, especially if you have had a US, UK, Schengen etc visa in the last 10 years. Yes, even if it is expired, it is fine. More details here: passingports.com/taiwan-visa-fo…
Thanks to this, visa for the both of us was free #PPinTaiwan

I feel compelled to share a few #travel tips in a thread if anyone's interested✈️

I travel about 150,000km/100,000mi annually

Advice for destressing travel day, and optimizing your trip end to end... etc.

Inspired by: @thepointsguy @darrenmurph @ZachHonig
It's worth it to spend an extra $30-$50 to fly an airline you like, treats you with dignity, and earns you miles worth something.

I used to think I was a snob for saying I wouldn't fly WOW as a speaker. It's not. Arriving happy is smart & has high ROI.
I personally prefer @FlyAirNZ & @AlaskaAir. Neither pay me to say that, but I pay to fly on their birdies often. I value legroom, overall experience, and quality of cheese onboard. Ambiance is also worth something when you fly a lot. Both get it.

About four or five years ago I traveled on assignment to the Azores, a volcanic archipelago off the coast of Portugal, and purchased a clay cooking pot in San Miguel. I finally decided it’s time to use it, so today I’ll be documenting the process for how to season it.
I’ve never actually seasoned an unglazed clay pot from scratch before and am figuring this out using advice from the internet and @davidleite. The first step is to immerse it in water for several hours. #claypot #cooking #cookware
A correction: this pot is actually from the Azorean island of Terceira. It was made by Olaria de S. Bento who I was told is one of very few people still producing pots like this by hand. #azores #claypot #terceira tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Rev…

I keep being asked what #Dickens would have made of #Brexit. Charles & Catherine Dickens took their family to live in #Genoa, #Italy for a year (in 1844-1845) – something Brits will no longer be able to do after 29 March. #travel
Before moving to #Italy, Charles #Dickens employed Antonio Gallenga, a political #refugee from #Parma who had migrated to #London, to teach him Italian. In #Brexit Britain, Gallenga would no longer be allowed to work legally.
#Dickens wrote a #travelogue about his year in #Italy. ‘Pictures from Italy’ details the family’s travels through #Europe to their new home in #Genoa, & Dickens' #travels around the country. In #Brexit Britain Dickens would no longer have the right to work in another EU country.

There's been so much hype about #Zanzibar, but at the same time, a few people weren't particularly thrilled. Had to go find out for myself ,so some friends and I planned a trip. What I think? Top rating for beaches, good food, so much to see, history. Read this thread... #Travel
From #DaresSalaam, you have the options of flying or going by ferry to #Zanzibar. On the other hand, you could fly directly there. We spent a few days in Dar, then we went by ferry...it cost $35 per person for economy and $50 per person for VIP. We travelled in the VIP section.
It takes 1hr30mins to get to Zanzibar by ferry. It could take longer when it's turbulent. The hotel we stayed in was an hour away from stone town. We stayed in Nungwi which is North of Zanzibar. #Travel #Africa #Tanzania #holidays

The answers to the #poll indicates that most of you feel the biggest gamechanger to the #tourism industry in this #Industry40 is the rise of low cost airlines followed closely by travel accommodations #startups like @Airbnb and @agoda.

Well, you aren't wrong there!
Low cost airlines #democratise travel for everyone. As @tonyfernandes puts it in @AirAsia's tagline: "Now Everyone Can Fly".

The first trip abroad that I paid for, was to #Malaysia and #Singapore. I've never understood the average Nigerian's obsession with "Jand" and "Yankee". So, as soon as I could afford to travel abroad, I chose somewhere exotic. #Travel #TravelBae
When I was growing up, I had a strong image of who I wanted to be in life. I wanted to be exposed and have distinct encounters. I wanted to explore unusual things and meet unusual people. #TravelBae
#Singapore & #Malaysia did that for me. I met people I wouldn't ordinarily connect with and listened to them talk about their society and daily lives. I returned from the trip knowing there was a world bigger than #Nigeria. There were people with national problems too. #TravelBae

OK, now we get onto what I wanted to do for y'all this late evening.
Namely, hoodoos! If you do, hoodoo.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoodoo_(g…
a.k.a. tent rock, fairy chimney or earth pyramid. All these photos are mine or with my camera by someone else, 2013, remote area of #Tanzania.
No hoodoo, but in which you see me, following the local guide, to go see hoodoos. Remote area of #Tanzania, 2013. I was the only foreigner there. A couple of Tanzanian tourists too, but srsly infrequented.
This is a very well-camouflaged praying-mantis I found along the way. The area is semi-arid to quite arid, so its coloration is very well-done.
