Quick thread / rant on @IEA's April Oil Market Report, which uses language that normalizes disastrous #climate outcomes ... like a future in which the oil industry remains "central to the functioning of the global economy."🤦🏼‍♀️

As @IEABirol says, countries should put clean energy at the ♥️ of economic recovery packages.

But how does that square with the IEA's message today that governments should "help bring the oil industry back from the brink"?

A: It doesn't.

The IEA talks today about the "challenges of investing to ... meet future growth" in oil, while failing to mention that that is NOT compatible with tackling the #climate crisis.

Limiting warming to 1.5C requires a managed phase-out of all fossil fuels:

The IEA constantly falls back on messaging that implies "stability" = the fossil fuel status quo.

But #climate (and thus economic) stability hinges on a *STABLE DECLINE* in oil and gas along with coal.

The language the IEA uses implies these are our only options:

1) Return to "normal market conditions" for Big Oil; or
2) Wreck the economy.

That is a FALSE choice.

Right now we're seeing an UNMANAGED decline in oil. That is hurting workers & vulnerable countries.

But governments can choose to proactively MANAGE a phase-out of oil in ways that guarantee a #JustTransition through a #JustRecovery.
