🚨BREAKING: Great news! Dr. Fauci confirms that a study of #remdesevir showed a significant positive effect in #COVID19 — the results “were quite good news.”

The study is the “1st truly high-powered randomized placebo-controlled trial” of #remdesivir.

#Remdesivir is NOT the be-all-end-all for #coronavirus, but as Fauci confirmed, this drug will serve as *an* important tool to treat #COVID19 patients.

#Remdesivir is now “standard of care” for #COVID19, per Fauci.

The fact that #Remdesivir showed benefit in these seriously ill #COVID19 patients is very encouraging. I’d expect greater benefit if the drug was given EARLIER in the course of disease. More studies are needed, but this well done study is very good news!😃

🚨US scientists say a new #coronavirus strain emerged in March and now dominates worldwide. The mutant (spike protein #D614G) appears to be *more contagious* than versions that spread early in the #CoronavirusPandemic and may bypass immunity to 1st strain.

Wherever the new #coronavirus strain appeared, it quickly infected far more people than earlier strains from #Wuhan, and within weeks it was the ONLY strain dominant in some nations. The new strain’s dominance demonstrates that it is more infectious, but it's not yet known why.😳
Prior scientific reports did NOT reveal any significant mutations that affected the infectivity of the #coronavirus. This new report is very troubling, as it may mean that immunity to the 1st strain or vaccines directed against the 1st strain may NOT be effective against the 2nd.

⚠️The Trump administration is organizing a Manhattan Project-type effort–“Operation Warp Speed" (Big Pharma/gov't agencies/DOD)–to drastically cut the time by 8 months to develop a #coronavirus #vaccine. Goal is to have 100 million doses ready by year end.

Taxpayers, not Big Pharma, will shoulder much of the financial risk that #vaccine candidates may fail.

Operation Warp Speed will use USG resources to quickly test the most promising #coronavirus vaccines in animals, then launch coordinated human trials to winnow down candidates.
The best prospective vaccines would go into wider trials at while mass production ramps up in parallel.

The project will cost billions and will likely result in significant waste by making lots of #vaccine doses before knowing if they’ll be safe/effective.

Current study had 2 groups of patients hospitalized with severe #COVID19:

▶️1 group got #remdesivir for 5 days; the other for 10 days
▶️>50% in both groups discharged from hospital within 14 days
▶️64.5% in the 5-days group were discharged vs 53.8% of in the 10-days group
#Remdesivir reportedly was effective in a different (@NIH) study that randomly assigned 400 hospitalized #COVID19 patients to take #remdesivir or placebo. Primary outcome is recovery by 29 days.

Results soon to be released from this more definitive study.
