The US government has seized more than $3.6 billion (€3.2 billion) worth of Bitcoins after a hacker attack on a crypto trading exchange. According to a statement, this is the largest seizure of financial assets by the Department of Justice to date.
The Bitcoins were captured in a cyber attack on Bitfinex, an online trading platform for cryptocurrencies, in 2016. The Justice Department also announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with the hack. They are accused of conspiracy to launder money.
Cryptocurrency worth a total of about 4.5 billion dollars is at stake. The couple from New York allegedly tried to launder nearly 120,000 Bitcoins that came from the hack.
