Watching US Deputy National Security Advisor Matt Pottinger speak in Chinese, including those in Communist China who can bypass the "Great Firewall."

Now he's talking about "Chinese heroes" of that era like Hu Shih, who championed literacy for the masses.
Unprecedented:

He's talking about civic-minded citizens who commit small acts of bravery, like Wuhan #coronavirus whistleblower Dr. Li Wenliang, embodying the May 4th spirit.

PC Chang who helped draft the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

Catholics being suppressed by the #CCP
Now he's talking about everyday people pushing back against the corruption of elites.

Wasn't the spirit of the May 4th movement for the people to govern themselves?

It's the first time I'm aware of, as host notes, an American official spoke in Chinese from the @WhiteHouse
He spoke in Chinese, because, as Dr. Li Wenliang said, "healthy societies should have more than one voice."

Cites #Taiwan as democracy having had success among Chinese.

Says media and social media ecosystem lacks diversity almost entirely, especially around politics, history.
He hopes to "start a conversation" among people around the world (and the Chinese people) about the things that people in #China have trouble discussing because of #CCP's strict information [that's my take].

This is the American government speaking directly to the Chinese people
*Correction, that should be "strict information control" above, i.e. control of media and social media, attempt to control what's talked about socially.

Pottinger says China has moved in a much more "illiberal direction" since WTO accession.
Pottinger: PC Chang came to the US to study on a scholarship, went back to China, and then came back to the West with ideas how China could influence the world.

PC Chang then brought to the table for the UN Declaration on Human Rights a "very Chinese perspective" ...
According to Pottinger, PC Chang showed how human rights in not the exclusive domain of Christianity.

There are strong currents of human rights in Confucianism and beyond.

PC Chang instrumental in putting the word "Universal" into the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Pottinger: Balancing nationalism, instinct "to be great again" with responsible, accountable government in critical.

If you introduce accountable government, it makes the chances of "greatness" much more possible.
Pottinger: Taiwan speaks to the bankruptcy of the claim that the Chinese people aren't suited to democracy.

How China governs itself is for the Chinese people to decide, not anyone else.

Speech was to remind people in China and with world of the legacy of the May 4th movement.
📺WATCH: In Pottinger's speech was PC Chang's contribution to the UDHR, that his ideas (steeped in traditional Chinese thought) brought together the rights of the individual AND ALSO their obligation to society.

🚨Pottinger is saying that freedom is an inherently Chinese thing.
