So, @RWE is trying to gain public support for its #LNG terminals in Germany by leading us to believe there is a #hydrogen future. Let us unpack this a little (THREAD):

1/ The #LNG infrastructure planned is not ready for H2. @TUHamburg explains that you need a temperature of <-250C for liquified H2, vs <-100C for liquified gas, we are yet to see plans that show the design can cope. Well explained here in @TspBackgroundEK background.tagesspiegel.de/energie-klima/…

2/ Shipping H2 is something that people working in the #maritime industry are wary of. It is highly flammable and the safety risks associated would drive up insurance premia. Given low energy density, you'd need many more loads for same value --> expensive.

3/ Instead, theoretically, you could use ammonia or methanise the H2....but ask any physicist what they think about that!! #efficeincy #cost

4/ @BloombergNEF analysis suggests importing hydrogen via ships eliminates all cost differential through lower cost renewables elsewhere. Most studies I’ve seen say producing the H2 in Europe or importing via pipeline much cheaper.

5/ This matters, as otherwise the market will be limited. Who would pay for expensive H2 if gas is much cheaper (given current market and subsidies) and so is electrification & efficiency (for some, not all end uses of course)?

6/ Importing green H2 also only makes sense from a #climate point of view if the exporting country has exhausted its potential of direct electrification (as much more efficient). Not many countries I can think of! Maybe let's get on deploying #renewables first.

In Sum: This seems more of an effort of #greenwashing greenwashing in order to get the public support (there have been protests & petitions), but I doubt they will be able to fool #investors with that.
