So, how does an organization respond to a petition of over 3700 people asking for said organization say #BlackLivesMatter & support the #LGBTQ community? A "Blue Ribbon Commission" A @SHRM THREAD
#HR #HRCommunity
Assigning an issue to a committee is often used as a delay tactic, designed to placate as "see, we're doing something." But when you look at the "something" they're doing here, this is the LEAST of what they could do & of the options, it takes the longest.
SHRM has strategic partnerships that they could have used to address the petition. @NAAAHRNatl would have happily partnered to provide content & DEI strategies. NAAAHR is org designed to support Black HR pros & give them DEI tools. Check them out here: naaahr.site-ym.com/default.aspx
SHRM has a list of hundreds of speakers - including those in its own speaker bureau like @DrBerticeBerry & Camille Chang Gilmore - who SHRM could have reached out to & paid to provide some strategies, tips & help create a toolbox for DEI initiatives.
Quick aside - If you search the SHRM Speaker Bureau by topic, JCT is included in the "diversity and inclusion" tab even though he now claims diversity is not his thing. (See the @businessinsider article.)
SHRM also could have gone to its members! Many of SHRM's members are DEI practitioners, out in the real world, doing the hard work of DEI. SHRM could have built stronger relationships with them by seeking their advice & highlighting member's good work.
Approaching strategic partners, tapping their bench of experts, including members, @SHRM could take real, meaningful action quickly. Did they do that? No. Instead, they chose to recreate the wheel, spend months hemming & hawing over something they claim to be the experts at.
AND, @SHRM has done NOTHING to support the #LGBTQ community. Zip, zero, zilch. No Pride statement, not strategies or toolbox for #HR pros. This is downright shameful.
So, to me, SHRM's response remains disappointing at best, a dereliction of responsibility to the #HRCommunity at worst. SHRM represents all of us in #HR & that means it is giving us all a black eye. If you think so too, please join us: chng.it/SQkhyr7r
