THREAD

Preparing for the @BirkbeckBEI @bbk_orgpsych Alec Rodger Memorial Lecture gave me the chance to reflect on 25 years of discussing evidence-based practice in #HR, #Management and #work #psychology.

Here's 18 things I think I got wrong in trying to promote the idea.
1. Focusing way too much on ‘the science’ (systematic reviews, pushing research) – important but it’s just one source of evidence and awareness doesn’t seem to change behaviour
2. Not acknowledging that universities and academics are, in general, part of the problem of low adoption not part of the solution

On doing threads, it has been on my mind to do a thread on "maximising internships".
So let's do that, but before then, how is your weekend going?
Maximising internships- a thread.
1. Its 2022, and internships are ubiquitous, they have always existed but the recent wave of globalisation means you can intern with any company across the globe despite your location or course of study.
You can also map out a blossoming career through internships. How, you ask?
2. The following are a couple of helpful tips to maximise your internships.
Care about the company culture: The first thing you probably should study is the company culture.
You don't want to be saying "mr" or bowing/kneeling to greet someone in London or New York.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶̶𝗻̶𝗰̶𝗹̶𝘂̶𝘀̶𝗶̶𝗼̶𝗻̶ 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲: a deeply disappointing thread 👇
First, let's set the scene with a couple of key facts:

👉 In the UK alone, it is estimated that 1 in 5 people have a disability

👉 80% of those people have an invisible disability

👉 The UK workforce contains over 4.4m disabled people

Okay, now onto the bad stuff👇
#DYK that almost half of disabled people in the UK are unemployed?

By December of 2021, the percentage of disabled people who are either unemployed or economically inactive had risen to 47.7%

Four Simple Tips for Onboarding Technical Talent

1. Help them see the bigger picture

Everyone wants to do meaningful work.

So from the get-go, help your technical hires understand how their work ties into your company’s mission.

#HR #techtwitter #HRTech
2. Set them up quickly

People want to build stuff, don’t make them wait for ages to get access to the tools and documentation they need.

Give them all they need right out of the gate.

Are we building a tool to simplify and automate this process? Maybe.😉
3. Give them a challenge

Don’t take too long to offer them a project with clear success metrics.

Remember, they want to build stuff.

Record Numbers of Americans Dying of Overdoses. Instead of Justice, We Get Theater👨‍⚖️

"Whole thing is kabuki theater, It ought to be about money" said Ausness. "About who pays what & instead they want to make Sacklers listen to people complain about them"

Guggenheim joined several other museums last week w/an announcement they are removing the Sackler nameplate from their arts center,

Once again victims are being offered busy work as though it were meaningful reform.

Anonymous @pennyappeal staff complaints. These are quite shocking 😮 (A thread) 👇
"@pennyappeal was one of the worst experiences of my career. I was asked about my plans for marriage during my interview" - former employee
"My number was handed out to God knows how many random men even when I asked not to. They will bully you via WhatsApp and message you around 2-5am asking why you're not awake and your opinions about things" - former @pennyappeal employee 🙄

THREAD: Everything is connected.

And so many of our modern societal problems & issues stem from disconnection.

This thread is about both connections b/w socio-cultural issues (connecting the dots) & also about connections between people. Those 2 things are connected.

/1
What we have here is human disconnectedness caused - in part - or at least greatly contributed to - by technological (over)connectedness. Another big contributing factor, I believe, is our traditional gender norms around #masculinity.

/2
Think about the phenomenon of employer “ghosting” during an interview process when they aren’t giving a candidate the job. I’ve learned it is quite common these days to not let that person know. You just stop communicating.

Starting a human or machine-based process late and finishing it quickly is also a sign of labour or robotic #efficiency, which is not taken into account by organizational #productivity specialists.
Doing things correctly matters without wasting time
#gembawalk #Lean #Agile #TQM
Arriving at 9 in the morning at the office and staying late beyond designated working hours is the worst kind of employee #attitude, which should be rebuked by the #HR Dept.
Why do some people stay late at work, anyway?
Spying? or other motives?
Surprisingly, I have come across some night shift workers who do fewer hours and are at times far better at producing results compared to daylight sleepy heads.
More organizational studies are required to check employee motivation, productivity and time-task assignment management

Directness & saying what you mean is important. The receiver also needs to be ready to tolerate this. Society & business places tend to prefer the passive aggressive so being direct does invoke blowback.
There is particular social cost to being direct & going against social norms

if your optics/demographics invoke mental models …say of expected discretion, “civility”, or “be kind” or “softness”

OR

if mental model invoked is “angry Black woman/man”

fastcompany.com/90413951/women…
“Be kind” is red flag: it identifies the passive aggressive shushing/shaming people who are threatened by @candor & perceive directness as aggression. It’s a fixed mindset trait or a negative consequence when empathy/emotions overindexed in ways to block growth & learning.

This makes me so 🤢

The idea that women are automatically “safe” is exactly what creates this “opportunity” for some women to exploit children & monetize their “optics” of “trustworthy” on behalf of predators.

Gender does not predict ethics, integrity, safety.
Why does #GhislaineMaxwellTrial matter to #womeninSTEM?
⬇️federal funding
➡️private donors (Epstein)

“Socialites” open doors to elite spaces, including #academia #science #STEM
Women=“optics” & “reputation management” for these wealthy predator men

theverge.com/2019/9/19/2087…
These same connected women, often daughters of powerful businessmen

are on boards of #WomeninSTEM “empowerment” organizations or on #MeToo (TimesUp scandal)

the very women who are predators of young women are given access to women’s “safe spaces”? (!!!)

This piece by @mckinnon_a will resonate with a lot of people. Most corporate wellness programs fall short of the mark, and some do so by an absurd margin. I want to discuss several reasons why this happens. Thread. 1/x

Firstly, let's deal with some elephants in the room. 2020 and 2021 have been tough on our mental health. We've all been through a ton of change, faced a lot of risk, and got cut off from many of our usual support structures. 2/x

If you're a parent of children, then you've been likely been isolating with kids. Many have been juggling this with working from home, two things that clash horribly. It's a particularly difficult form of "role conflict", a major contributor to stress. 3/x

A thought experiment from @YiannisGabriel: "Imagine that 80% of all research outputs in the social sciences produced in the last five years was destroyed without trace. Would the world in any meaningful way be a worse place?"

HT @andre_spicer
It is this huge chunk of "meaningless clutter", that, in part, makes it so difficult for scientific evidence to usefully help inform practice in fields such as #HR, #Management, #Workpsychology and many others.
In my exitement I forgot to link to the orignal post from @YiannisGabriel - yiannisgabriel.com/2020/01/the-do…

This morning, as I prepare my coffee, let me tell you a tale of a time when I was affected by the #wagegap. This one’s a doozy.

When I first became an #infosec analyst, the #CISO had intended that I make $65k which was a fair wage for the position, region, and etc.

1/?
The #IT management and #HR had all agree and the paperwork was printed out. The #CTO volunteered to send it to me, even though he was technically in a separate department.

Now, I didn’t know that the wage was supposed to be $65k, I wasn’t a part of these convos.

2/?
At the time, I was just making $14 an hour on their HelpDesk knowing that I would soon be promoted and was awaiting to sign off on it.

When the CTO delivered the paperwork to me, the amount I signed off on was $45k. I even said, “Hm. Seems low?” And he didn’t say anything.

Word “racism” silenced, actively, by #MedEd #MedTwitter #healthcare#professionalism” & “communication” labels

The KPIs and OKRs

A Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a measurable value that demonstrates how effectively a company is achieving key business objectives. Organizations use KPIs to evaluate their success at reaching targets.
The acronym OKR stands for Objectives and Key Results, a popular goal management framework that helps companies implement and execute strategy. The benefits of the framework include a better focus on results that matter, increased transparency, and better (strategic) alignment.
OKR achieves this by organizing employees and the work they do around achieving common Objectives.
