I tried in this reply to @socialistsunday to identify some problems that stand in the way of any attempt to create an effective political movement on the left. We need a political language that works.
When it comes to defining the kind of state we'd want to achieve, we're fighting an unequal war. 'They' can imagine a minimal state in which all can succeed (who deserve to) by competing (but nobody loses). 'We' need to describe how a state can work well for all of its people.
'We' need to describe in workable detail what the state needs to do to achieve that objective. 'They' can pretend it's a fact that the invisible hand of their markets can do what the invisible brain of the market knows will turn out for the best.
Whatever 'we' say needs to be done, 'we'll be told that the state has no money beyond what it raises in tax. They'll tell us the state mustn't build up a burden of debt. What they'll say is what we've always been told. We need to be able to show them those theories are wrong.
