I feel like a need to give a rundown of the night since it was so hectic, here we go-
The protest started marching from Peninsula Park at 9:20, after heading west for only a couple of blocks, a police riot team was blocking the road ahead.
There were no orders or communication from the police, just blocking the road. After a few minutes the protesters started to move another direction.
What followed was a short cat and mouse game until 10:00 PM when the group met a firm riot line and a stand off begun. At about 10:10 a ballon full of paint gets tossed at the police. The LRAD and Officers will refer to this as a “paint bomb” for the rest of the night.
An “unlawful assembly” is declared and at about 10:20 the police begin to bull rush the crowd. Many smoke grenades are shot off and some of the worst physical violence I’ve ever seen occurrs.
Police pushed people back to Peninsula Park with a series of bull rushes. At the park the police decide to try to ignore the TRO protecting press, and harras me. Including as they are about to drive off, getting off the van, walking into the park, and grabbing my phone.
A few officers really wanted to beat me up and arrest me, I could see it in their eyes. Eventually they drive off, and people recover for a bit in the park.
At this point folks tried to head vaguely in the direction of the PPA. The police continued to block off a lot of the main roads. Two dumpster fires were lit as people were upset with the massive amount of violence they just witnessed.
At 11:50 the police kettle the crowd in a small corner parking lot, one person is arrested but then after a few minutes the cops just drive away. People begin marching on just the sidewalk, headed across a bridge over the I-5.
At the other side of the bridge, at 12:10 AM, the police had a riot line blocking the entire street, this caused lots of traffic to built up. After 10 minutes, a few people decided to move off the sidewalk since police were already blocking the road.
At 12:28 AM, police bull rushed on the bridge, chasing the small remaining crowd through residential streets again. At least 2 separate vehicle’s tires were ripped by the police during this chase. By 12:40 most of the crowd had hidden down side streets. Here I called it a night.
So much raw violence from the Portland Police Bureau tonight, but not a correlating number of arrests. The PPB knows that the new DA is going to drop most arrest charges, so instead the officers just used a ton of physical violence on people protesting.
