Wowza. Today's Grand Rounds with @reshmajagsi addressing #genderequity in academic medicine was pure 🔥🔥🔥.

Hard to capture the absolute tour-de-force talk...but here are a few pearls.

Dr. Jagsi started with reviewing the absolute dearth of women in #leadership positions within academic medicine. Term limits may be part of the solution: at current rate, medical students now (>50% women) will be retired before we see gender parity.

And it’s not just #leadership positions --> there are large gender inequities in research authorship, editorial positions, grants, and salaries.

This is IRRESPECTIVE of institution, speciality, type of K-award, parental status, etc.

3/7
Why do these inequities exist? Dr. Jagsi highlighted multiple systemic causes ranging from unconscious bias, gendered social norms, institutional policies that disproportionately penalize women physicians, and harassment.

So what can we do about gender inequity in academic medicine?

Our single favorite take-home point: “Don’t fix women, fix the systems”. 👏👏👏

5/7
Solutions must be multilevel and comprehensive: stronger sexual harassment data/policies, mentoring programs, transparent/consistent evaluation and promotion criteria, support for physician mothers, and ultimately, a cultural transformation.

Thank you, @reshmajagsi, for such a motivating talk and your leadership in this area. So much to be done...lets get to work!
