In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of B.C. has called bullshit on right-wingers who say they’re only concern about patient interests when they campaign for more private health care. The courts have sided with the public, not the profiteers! #AbLeg bccourts.ca/jdb-txt/sc/20/…
The purpose of restrictions on private health “is to preserve and ensure the sustainability of a universal public healthcare system that ensures access to necessary medical care is based on need and not on an individual’s ability to pay,” says the Court. And it’s constitutional!
Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Jason Kenney! Score one for the good guys!
Private care “would reduce the capacity of the public system..., increase the public system’s costs, create perverse incentives for physicians, ... undermine political support for the public system, and exacerbate inequity in access to medically necessary care.”
“...the expert evidence (including from the plaintiffs’ experts) is that duplicative private healthcare would not decrease wait times in the public system and there is expert evidence that wait times would actually increase”
Here a very good breakdown of the decision...

We’re still reading the fine print, but it looks like the federal government is going to provide 10 days of paid sick leave to all Canadians. As ⁦@cafreeland⁩ said, we can’t hope to deal with a pandemic without paid sick leave. Bravo! #AbLeg #canlab cbc.ca/news/politics/…
Having said that, I agree with professor @MilesCorak when he says the EI system is still in desperate need of a full overhaul. Band-aids are not enough.
The good news is that both ministers seem to have acknowledged this fact in their news conference. @cafreeland suggested that more major announcements with be made about EI in the upcoming Throne Speech. Overall, a very promising start in her new role as finance minister!

I’ve had it with all the sanctimonious gaslighting spewing from Alberta conservatives about a damn mug. And the false equivalence! Here’s a thread giving examples of what UCP supporters have done to “political discourse” in our province. #AbLeg #abpoli
Unprecedented number death threats against a sitting Premier. Targeted not only because she was NDP, but also because she’s a woman. Image
Here’s a particularly awful one... Image

Jason Kenney may think he has vanquished unions with Bill 32, but he is about to “reap the whirlwind.” His arrogance and his radicalism is uniting Albertans in opposition to his dangerous agenda. Get ready for a “harvest of protest.” #AbLeg #canlab #abpoli afl.org/jason_kenney_m…
“Jason Kenney is afraid of me; but even more importantly, he’s afraid of what I represent: and that’s the power that ordinary working people can wield when they act collectively through their unions.”
“Premier Kenney has a plan; a plan to transform Alberta in the image of a backward Republican American state...he wants to turn Alberta into Alabama North.”

The UCP’s new anti-worker law, Bill 32, represents a fundamental attack on worker rights & democracy. This isn’t about “balancing the scales”; it’s about tipping them grossly in favour of the UCP, corporations and the wealthy. #AbLeg #canlab #cdnpoli edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new…
Here’s a transcript of the comments I made to reporters. “This Bill will dramatically reduce the bargaining power and legal protections currently enjoyed by working Albertans and set off a race to the bottom.” #canlab afl.org/_this_is_a_dar…

Freedom of Information laws are necessary to keep governments accountable. They’re a cornerstone of democracy. But the UCP is breaking its own laws by refusing to release documents about this noxious union-busting “information line.” #ableg #abpoli #canlab thestar.com/edmonton/2019/…
This program, designed to discourage Albertans from exercising their constitutional right to organize, was launched more 8 months ago. We submitted an Freedom of Information request on Oct. 23, 2019. On Dec. 19, we were told that 255 pages of documents would be released to us.
On Jan. 27, 2020, we were told the documents had to be “signed off.” In other words, they were sitting on the Labour Minister’s desk awaiting his approval.

BREAKING: The UCP continues to kill jobs, not create them. 19,000 Alberta jobs lost in January! Kenney’s austerity policies are making our economy weaker, not stronger. #WhereAreTheJobsJason? #ableg #abpoli #canlab #cdnpoli afl.org/the_ucp_contin…
After improving dramatically in 2017 and 2018, Alberta’s unemployment rate is now continuing to climb.
After years and years of leading the country, Alberta’s employment rate continues to fall.
