Last night, at around 2am, a young man's life was ended during an altercation involving guns.

We don't have all the details right now, and we may never. But it's almost certain that this wasn't a random incident - gun violence usually isn't.

The #YYC Public Safety Task Force will be meeting for the third time on Friday (September 18th). We have reviewed many of the preventative programs available locally, and we are shifting the conversation towards the gaps and challenges facing those who work to make Calgary safer.
We can't do this alone.

Let's work together to build a safer city, while listening to subject-matter experts as well as ordinary citizens. If we delay these challenging conversations, we will continue waking up to headlines like this.

This Monday, Albertans will decide who to vote for in the federal election.

After living through two years of Kenney's disastrous conservative government, the choice should be easy.

That's because Jason Kenney and Erin O'Toole are cut from the same cloth.

1/7
Four days ago, @erinotoole praised @jkenney, saying “We need to learn the lessons of each wave of the pandemic, and the best contact tracing efforts in the country were in Alberta.”

Last fall, O’Toole said, “Premier Kenney has navigated this COVID-19 pandemic far better than the federal government has.”

THREAD

In early July, I voted to maintain Calgary's indoor mask bylaw for a few more weeks out of an abundance of caution, especially considering the upcoming Calgary Stampede.

Premier @jkenney ridiculed Calgary City Council for even considering this measure.
It's now August 25.

Hospitalizations are up. ICU beds are filling. Nurses and doctors are facing a capacity crisis. Parents are worried about their unvaccinated children.

And 1,076 new COVID cases. Today.
The arrogance and incompetence of this conservative provincial government is only exceeded by their indifference to our well-being.

The @UCPCaucus is, as always, more concerned about their political base.

I was recently appointed to the Calgary Police Commission. As a lifelong Calgarian, and a representative of Calgary's most diverse ward, I have a responsibility to share the perspectives of communities that have so often been neglected.

After holding dozens of townhalls, knocking on thousands of doors, and bringing the Public Safety Task Force forward, I’ve heard far too many heartbreaking stories of families devastated by violence.

Calgary should be a safe city for EVERYBODY, not just those in certain neighbourhoods. We can only accomplish this if we listen to those who, although not always the loudest, are bringing forward compassionate and equitable solutions.

It's been almost five months for those in NE #yyc impacted by the June hailstorm.

Can you imagine experiencing a cold Calgary winter with broken windows? Watching your damaged siding deteriorate further?

For those in #Ward5 waiting on repairs, this is reality.

I brought forward a second motion to Council to provide additional relief to Northeast residents who are struggling, through no fault of their own, to repair and replace their damaged property.

It is unfortunate that #yyccc - the level of government with the least financial capacity - are the only ones willing to act in support of our Northeast communities.

As elected officials in #yyc, we will not abdicate our responsibility to those in need.
