The Hungarian ruling party, Fidesz, has led a full-on assault against independent media to undermine critics & those who would expose their corruption.
EU citizens want EU funds conditional on a member state's respect for rule of law & democracy.
But the EU's German presidency (under Merkel, @epp) & European Commission (under von der Leyen, @epp), have watered down the main proposal to protect Orbán. hrw.org/news/2020/10/0…
Throughout it all - with every step that the Hungarian ruling party has taken to destroy democracy and bring a dictatorship to the heart of the EU - the European People's Party @epp has stood by their ally. They should have moved to #ExpelFidesz; instead, they only helped them.
So, @epp, will it ever end? Is there nothing that will stop you from supporting the party that is now running a dictatorship in Hungary?
The party that your own president compared to Nazis?
Looking forward to your reply.
I've just received a long letter from the European People's Party, @epp, explaining why they have supported the rise of a dictatorship in an EU member state.*

*No, of course, I didn't. They are still afraid to respond because they know they have no good arguments.
Poland's ruling party leader Kaczyński calls on Poles to defend his policies & the church against widespread anti-government protests demanding women’s rights: reuters.com/article/us-pol…
Partia rządząca zachęca do kolejnych ataków.
Liczne miasta i wioski w calej Rurytanii ogłosiły się "strefami wolnymi od Polaków", na rogatkach pojawiły się znaki dające do zrozumienia, że Polacy nie są tam mile widziani.
Very disturbing news out of EU member Ruritania today, as the president declares that the country’s Polish minority are not human beings. He says Polishness is “just an ideology.”
This kind of dehumanization of a minority is often an early warning signal of bigger crimes to come, and already over the past months, we have seen increasing attacks on Polish people in the streets of communities across Ruritania. The ruling party is encouraging more.
Numerous towns and villages throughout Ruritania have also already declared “Pole-free zones”, with signs on the outskirts of these communities announcing where Polish people are not welcome.
Seeing disturbing reports of intensified fighting in Nagorno-#Karabakh but information very limited and Twitter generally only has propagandists for one side or the other. Be very wary of what you share re #Armenia & #Azerbaijan today.
Friday question: For such a visionary project, why does the EU have so many cowardly, mediocre politicians? Sure, some talk a visionary game, but when it’s time to act or announce policy proposals - even before debate & compromises - it’s almost always a surrender of EU values.
They almost always cave in to the extremist xenophobes, in particular. Look at the depressing appeasement strategy behind vdl’s “Migration Pact” to take just one recent example. Or Weber’s (& Tusk’s) endless cowering towards, and empowerment of, Orbán.
If we had had weak leaders like this back in the day, there never would have been any European integration project. They would have said, oh dear, the Nazis & fascists don’t want it, so we can’t do it. Just pathetic.
