... and was formalized at the Cairo Conference of 1961. During the entire Cold War with the #SovietUnion, India was non-aligned with the western world despite the fact that it was a democracy.
The year after Cairo, in 1962, China launched a war against India for the Aksai Chin, taking 14,700 square miles of Indian territory and causing 1,300 Indian deaths and 1,000 wounded.
India should have known at that point that a non-aligned position was one that would make the country vulnerable.
Now India has finally made the right choice to stand with other democracies against totalitarian communism, this time in the teeth of Xi Jinping's renewed assaults from Aksai China.
The new agreement will be critical for India's military targeting of Chinese forward positions in not only Aksai Chin, but across the northeastern border from India's Arunachal Pradesh region.
If China's political and economic influence in them is not already too great, we should expect other major non-aligned Asian countries facing #China's territorial aggression, most importantly #Indonesia, #Vietnam, and #Myanmar, to move in the direction of a defense alliance...
... with the US and allies. However, if Biden wins in November, this may not take place as he has downplayed the threat from China, and has failed to confront territorial aggression by China and Russia as strongly, including in #Ukraine.
