Latest: I joined @abcnews's World tonight to talk about the arrest of #HongKong teen activist Tony Chung and two other teenage activists yesterday. In the first part of the interview, I highlighted how the arrest of high profile activists is the government's way to send ...
... warning to other young protesters and activists in #HK that if they continue to participate in any form of protest against the government under the #NSL, this is the kind of consequences that they could face.
In part 2 of the interview, I elaborated on how Tony Chung's attempt to seek help for arriving in #Taiwan back in July went unanswered and I explained why the government in Taiwan might have to take a more cautious line to handle cases involving high profile individuals ...
. The possible reasoning behind #Taiwan government's extremely careful way of handling potential asylum-seeking attempts from high-profile #HongKong activists is that if they outright assist these individuals from fleeing to Taiwan, it would be interpreted as a provocative ...
... against #Beijing. So instead of directly triggering a retaliation from Beijing, the Taiwanese government is carefully assessing the kind of cases that they can handle. Unfortunately, there is still no complete mechanism in place to assist potential asylum-seeking from ...
... high profile #HongKong activists, which leave their potential plan to seek short-term refuge in #Taiwan rather risky and unpredictable. @lnachman32 @MargaretKLewis @jwassers @sharonyamsy @SheenaGreitens
In part 3 of the interview, I further elaborated on why there haven't really been any high profile asylum-seeking cases from #HongKong in #Taiwan. The main point is the sensitive political nature of Taiwan's status and how it will be viewed by #Beijing.
For regular #HongKong people seeking to come to #Taiwan through regular immigration and employment route, the Hong Kong Taiwan Exchange Office is capable of offering such support. However, for high-profile HK activists, they will likely be left in limbo if they try ...
... to arrive in #Taiwan through unofficial route. The prime example is the 12 #HongKong people that are currently detained in #China. I provided more detail about how the 12 of them are now facing the worst nightmare extended from last year's extradition bill protest,...
... in which they are now left to face the non-transparent Chinese legal system and they can't access the kind of legal resources that they are entitled to if they were facing trials in #HongKong. Lawyers hired by their families have been forced to drop the cases and they ...
... are now going to face trials with the "assistance" of government-assigned lawyers.
In the final part of the interview, the presenter raised the latest information about Chinese journalists working for foreign media in #China being asked by the Chinese foreign ministry to re-apply for their credentials. (first shared by @billbirtles.)
The news comes amid worsening conditions in #China for foreign correspondents and Chinese journalists working for foreign media. With the original support system evaporating at a record-speed, Chinese journalists are now caught in the middle without proper support ...
... while they have to face the risk of choosing to continue to go down the path that they have chosen when they decide to accept the employment or to follow instructions given by the Chinese foreign ministry.

Following @kevinroose's report on the @EpochTimes' rise, the Epoch Times responded with its own piece, describing the result of the report as "disappointing" and said Roose resorts to "factual errors, innuendo, and misrepresentations" in a ... theepochtimes.com/new-york-times…
... "smear campaign against a competing media outlet." The Epoch Times also criticized Roose and Ben Smith of discussing "a collective effort against The Epoch Times, raise questions about the intent behind this article."
"The article could easily have been written as a success story of a group of Chinese Americans who cherish their First Amendment rights and have succeeded in growing a large independent media outlet."
