Our new paper @GlobalChangeBio
outlines 5 key aspects for #research on Amazonian fires, especially for those using remote sensing and broad climate indexes – a thread.

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/gc…
@GlobalChangeBio 1 - Amazonian #vegetation is not only determined by climate. As such, Koppen-Geiger climate zones can lead to wrong assumptions, such as characterizing all the southern part of the basin as savannas instead of forests. Image
@GlobalChangeBio 2 – The Amazon Basin does not have a single precipitation pattern or a single dry season – there are marked spatial differences that are essential to be considered when studying #fires in the region. Image
@GlobalChangeBio 3 – Not all Amazonian fires are #forest fires – there are deforestation fires, pasture fires and subsistence farming fires. We discuss these in more detail in this previous paper:
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
@GlobalChangeBio 4 – Forest fires are hard to detect – the 30cm flames are not easily detected under 50m canopies. Image
@GlobalChangeBio 5 – #deforestation is different from degradation – while the former leads to the complete removal of the forest, the latter just changes its structure, although these changes can be profound and with long-lasting impacts. Image
@GlobalChangeBio Without carefully considering these aspects, research on such a complex social-economic system can lead to flawed results, hindering #conservation efforts and negatively informing decision makers.
@GlobalChangeBio Still, more research on fire dynamics, long-term impacts of fire on #biodiversity and carbon stocks, as well as on the human fire use are essential to help to develop effective measures to preserve the Amazon. Image
@GlobalChangeBio This paper is another team effort involving several people and institutions: Nathália Carvalho (from @inpe_mct &Cemaden), @LianaAmazonia (@CEMADEN ), @aragao_luiz (Inpe and @UniofExeter ), @FilipeEco and @JosBarlow from @LancasterUni and me from both @ecioxford and @LancsUniLEC

BREAKING: June 2020 was the worst June on record for Amazonian deforestation - 1034 km2 of #forests were lost. Bolsonaro has been in office for 18 months, during 9 of which we have seen record deforestation rates.
President #Bolsonaro took office in January 2019. Since then these are the months with record deforestation:
May 2019 (then surpassed by May 2020)
July 2019
Aug 2019
Set 2019
Nov 2019
Jan 2020
Feb 2020
June 2020

Data from the Brazilian Space Agency: terrabrasilis.dpi.inpe.br/app/dashboard/…
45% of the area deforested between January 2019 - April 2020 has not yet burned. When adding this up with the area deforested in May 2020 (832 km2) and June 2020 (2034 km2) we can expect a *very* bad burning season to come.

Amazonian and African *intact* forests are absorbing less carbon, than they sued to, thus contributing less to mitigate #ClimateChange Here goes a few thoughts on the new paper @nature
nature.com/articles/s4158…
@nature First and foremost, it is commendable the vast amount of data used in this paper. Data that was sampled in extreme #fieldwork conditions by dozens of people. Without these, such robust analyses would never be possible. It takes a lot of time, different grants and plenty dedication
@nature Second, long-term data curation was vital to make this paper possible. @ForestPlots is an example of how to store long-term data and on how to do multiple checks on data quality.
