"The whole problem arises since governments don't put economic value to a forest. We don't want to stop developmental projects in the country but we can't have natural wealth of the forests eroded," #CJI tells Attorney General while hearing #Jharkhand Govt's suit against Centre.
#Jharkhand Govt has challenged the Centre's decision for virtual auction process of 41 coal blocks for commercial mining in the state.
As #SupremeCourt mulls a panel of experts to assess the environmental aspect with regard to mining, Attorney General opposes the proposition.
#Jharkhand Govt submits in the #SupremeCourt that all seven areas, where commercial mining is being proposed, fall in the eco-sensitive zone.
#CJI tells AG the court's conscience must be satisfied about the environmental aspect & hence the Centre should hold its hands for now.
AG resists the court's suggestion, points out the state govt was perfectly fine with the auction & their only concern was regarding their share in the auction. Venugopal says auction shouldn't be stopped since it would affect the all India process.
#CJI observes SC is contemplating directions against mining in any part of the country if the mining falls within a radius of 50 km of eco-sensitive zones.
Venugopal retorts this will impact development & industrialisation. He adds SC already have passed judgments on this aspect
On a request by AG, #SupremeCourt defers the matter to Friday for a detailed hearing on all aspects, including setting up of a committee to assess environmental aspects of commercial mining.

#SupremeCourt takes up appeal by #AndhraPradesh Govt against the high court order of staying the SIT probe into alleged irregularities into projects started by previous TDP govt, including land acquisition in Amaravati.
Sr adv Dushyant Dave appears for @ysjagan's Govt, says the HC order is extraordinary as it stops the entire investigation into allegations of fraudulent practices and abuse of power. He cites the report by the sub-committee, on the basis of which a SIT was constituted.
It is impossible for a high court to interfere at a pre-investigatiom stage & stays all proceedings, contends Dave. He adds a busybody like a member of TDP moves the high court talking about image of his party & the petition is admitted.
The reply alleges an insidious propaganda by political parties, a section of media to malign the Yogi Govt despite a "diligent probe".
This affidavit claims political parties, a section of media is trying to give a communal & casteist colour to #Hathras incident & hence, the #SupremeCourt should monitor the #CBI probe in a time bound manner. This will ensure a free probe besides weeding out false narratives.
