I've reached out to all my friends in #Artsakh over the last few hours. They confirm heavy fighting throughout the night in and around #Shushi, as well as on the outskirts of #Stepanakert.
The battle for Shushi either way will be a decisive one...
Journalists and thousands of civilians have been evacuated from #Stepanakert overnight and in the morning. Of my 20+ friends in #Artsakh, only one remains on the ground. #Shusha is almost deserted by now, obviously.
The reason is simple: #Shushi isn't 'just' a historical and cultural centre of large symbolic value. It's also the decisive location for the war. "Whoever controls Shushi controls #Artsakh" is a well-known saying locally.
#Aliyev not only announced the 'liberation' of #Shushi (which seems to be a false claim as of now), he also reiterated that he won't stop before all of #Artsakh is 'liberated'. In other words: If Shushi falls to AZ, a second siege of #Stepanakert is more than likely
To give you an even better impression why #Stepanakert is in danger of constant bombardments once #Shushi is in #Azerbaijan's hands, here is a picture from the road slightly North of Shushi overlooking Stepanakert.
(my pic, 2014)
More drastically - There is 1 (ONE!) building in #Stepanakert that survived the 1991-92 siege of the city: The old theatre (not in use anymore).
Ethnic cleansing, a humanitarian disaster and the loss of at least two cities is in the making, as the intl community remains silent.
Watching old pictures and videos from #Shushi now is painful. This #Khorovats and dancing in Shushi Fortress seems so distant now 😢
(also - get well soon, @initiaty! Hopefully we will be able to dance again, one day...)

What is missing in the #Artsakh ceasefire agreement is any tiny bit of humanity towards or hope for #Armenia|ns. All humanitarian parts of the UN resolutions and the Madrid Principles have been left out on purposed (as #Aliyev smilingly announced).
(sorry being negative!)
UN res. 822 (2) urges both parties to immediately resume negotiations fopr the resolution of the conflict within the #OSCE Minsk Group.
The now signed deal makes no mention of this. #Artsakh's future won't be determined by the OSCE anymore, but AZ, RU, AM and TR. Bad news!
UN res. 822 (3) called for unimpedent access of international humanitarian relief and adherence with humanitarian law.
This was left out, too. #Azerbaijan and #Russia will now decide if humanitarian relief is allowed or hum law will be adhered to. Bad news, too.
There was clearly no alternative for #Artsakh and #Armenia to signing the deal. As #Shushi fell, constant shelling of #Stepanakert would have followed and a complete loss would have followed. It was the only chance to safe some lives, at least.
Yet, that treaty is horrible:
Most of the lost territory was sparsely populated (Agdam, Kalbajar and Lachin Rayons of #Azerbaijan). They were always kept as buffers, mostly. Losing them surely weakens #Aartsakh, but at the same time was always calculated for.
Can I be and should I be neutral?
A brief thread on #Artsakh/#Armenia/#Azerbaijan, neutrality and what it means.
Through my work at @CONIFAOfficial I first heard about #NagornoKarabakh in 2014, when they wanted to join the organisation. I had no idea where or what it is.
I did my homework and read about a hundred articles, watched documentaries and read a book about the region. It depressed me, as most stories were about wars, ethnic cleansing and human rights violations.
Still, I decided to see it myself when Nagorno Karabakh invited me...
It was my first time leaving the EU and the first time traveling alone (without my parents or my girlfriend). I was naturally nervous and I haven't heard of my host for days when I landed in Yerevan and thus had no idea if they'll pick me up.
I see that video of "Swedendemocratic" Charlie Weimers making the rounds on Armenian Twitter now and it makes me shuckle.
This neo-fascist party is not your ally - they are against you. They just happen to Turkey a tad more than you. #Artsakh#Artsakhnow
His party, and he himself, are not only deeply islamophobic (and thus now happily side with Armenia not for Armenia's sake, but to "weaken the enemy"), it is also full of hate against Romanians, e.g., and basically every other non-Swedish:
This party and their EU parliamentary faction would be the first to vigorously fight against helping #Armenian refugees. It would be the first to block any humanitarian help for #Armenia, if that would come with costs.
