The virus has exposed not only gross incompetence, but cronyism & corruption at the heart of government

With contracts for chums and billions of tax-payers money siphoned off to the private sector

And unnecessary lives lost

Thread ⬇️

1/ #Dispatches #bbcnews #r4today
Testing and trace is a vital component of infectious disease control

Against the advice of public health experts, the government outsourced both elements of the process to favourable private companies, with no expertise

Resulting in a dog’s breakfast of incompetence

2/
Deloitte was given the contract, of undisclosed value, to set up off-site testing centres & run the new Lighthouse Laboratories, bypassing existing NHS infrastructure

Deloitte then went on to outsource the running of the testing centres to numerous other corporations

3/
From the start, there has been a catalogue of cock-ups

- samples lost

- leaking test vials

- barely trained staff

- people directed to nonexistent testing centres

A hospital in Surrey had to take over a centre as staff were sent wrong results

5/
Delays in processing results has left NHS staff unable to work

GPs & local teams have been unable to receive timely, results from these private testing sites

It is this basic failure, that public health experts in Leicester state contributed to the extended lockdown there

6/
Serco & Sitel (with NO expertise) have been awarded multi-million contracts to carry out a spectacularly ineffective tracing system

Again bypassing local public health teams, for which contact tracing is their bread and butter

Why?!!

7/

#contractsforchums
Serco has been spectacularly ineffective

(According to govt records, 1/3 of positives not contacted)

The consequence of these failures is soaring profits, predicted at £165m

This year, Serco will be paying out dividends to their shareholders, directly from taxpayers 💰💰💰

8/
CEO of Serco - Rupert Soames

Also, Grandson of Churchill & brother of Tory MP

Stated that the Covid response went

“a long way in cementing the position of private sector companies in the public sector supply chains”

#cronyism #Corruption #sackserco

9/
For a govt ‘unable’ to fund school meals, they have extraordinarily cavalier attitude towards govt spending when it comes to the private sector

#ContractScandal

Contracts for PPE were given to, among others, a pest control company, employment agency, & confectionery 🤷🏽‍♀️

10/
Ayanda Capital, which specialises in private equity, got a £150m contract for 50 million FFP2 masks

Not a SINGLE mask was used, as they failed safety standards

The approach to sell the masks came from Andrew Mills, government adviser AND a senior board adviser at Ayanda

11/
#ContractScandal & the list goes on
#contractsforchums #Chumocracy

Lucrative contracts for chums

Paid for by the public purse

Disgusting levels of Cronyism & corruption, that has potentially cost unnecessary lives lost

1️⃣ FUNDING

These promises of “extra spending” we hear every year never materialise

The reality: An NHS underfunded by by 30% since 2010

That’s 30 BILLION / year short

The recent ‘cash injection’ promised by the Tories, is STILL under what the 4% needed to stop further decline
2️⃣STAFFING

Dangerous staffing shortages across the NHS

40,000 nurses
10,000 Hospital DRs
7000 GPs

For years the govt have been warned about the worsening shortages

Their response:

Visa caps
Nursing bursary cut
Training budgets cut
Imposing unfair contracts on Junior DRs
