Cyclone #Burevi to Cross Sri Lanka and Hit India’s Southern Tip on Thursday Night; Tamil Nadu, Kerala Under Alert

On Wednesday night last week, #CycloneNivar drenched several parts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh. Exactly a week later, #CycloneBurevi is set to cause torrential downpour over southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala

#Burevi is a name suggested by the Maldives, as per the #cyclone naming guidelines set by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). #Burevi is not as strong as its predecessor, #Nivar, as the Bay of Bengal lacks the energy to feed the system further.

The #storm is located in the southwest Bay of Bengal and progresses west-northwestward at 12 kmph toward Sri Lanka. The landfall in Sri Lanka is expected between Wednesday evening and early hours on Thursday with #Cyclonic Storm intensity.

The model projections are inconsistent after the landfall over Sri Lanka, but in any scenario, increased rainfall with thunderstorms are very likely across the southern parts of India from Wednesday to Thursday.

As per the projections by the @Indiametdept (IMD), the #cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 gusting to 90 kmph would be centred very close to Pamban around noon of December 3.

South Tamil Nadu and south Kerala have been kept under a ‘red warning’ by #IMD for Thursday,while an ‘orange alert’ is in place across the two states from Wednesday to Friday. The red warning urges residents and authorities to take action.

#Burevi will be the fifth cyclone over the North Indian Ocean this year, after Amphan, Nisarga, Gati and Nivar. Fortunately, it is expected to be the least destructive of all if the projections hold true.
