HOW TO TREAT AND PREVENT SYPHILIS

Many people have #syphilis but don't know. They keep spreading it to others through kisses, sex, etc.

We're seeing more cases of complicated syphilis in hospitals recently. But it can be treated & prevented... THREAD 🧵

Retweet for awareness
Syphilis is a Sexually Transmitted Infection, STI.

That means you get it mainly from having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral #sex!

That's why syphilis is spreading most rapidly among our sexually active ladies & guys.
Syphilis is caused by this tiny spiral germ called Treponema palladium.
Syphilis can also be spread;

• From infected mother to #fetus inside the womb

• Through blood transfusion, &

• Through wounds that come into contact with infected wound;
e.g. #kissing a person with an infected mouth wound when you have a wound in your mouth!
Syphilis symptoms are usually so similar to many other diseases that it can be extremely difficult for people to know they have syphilis.

In fact, syphilis is sometimes called "The Great Imitator" because it's symptoms can mimic those of many other diseases!
Also, the signs & symptoms of syphilis will depend on the stage of the disease.

The stage can be;
- primary
- secondary
- latent, or
- tertiary

An infected person will likely go through these 4 stages if no treatment is given.
In Primary syphilis, there may be a single, firm, painless, non-itchy wound called #Chancre.

It usually appears on the site where you got the infection, e.g. in your PENIS, VULVA or MOUTH, & is about 1 to 2cm wide.

Also, there may be multiple #sores & loss of hair (alopecia)
In Secondary syphilis, you have a #rash, often in your palms & soles.

The rash is incredibly itchy. You'll be scratching it like mad!

Some broad based elevated #plagues (called Condylomata lata) may also occur.

In fact, there may be sores all over your mouth, vagina or penis.
Over time, Syphilis enters the latent phase.

Here there are few or no symptoms and this can last for years.

Sadly, people with latent syphilis can still spread the disease if they have unprotected sex!

Hence, spread of syphilis during this phase is QUITE COMMON! Beware!
The last stage, Tertiary syphilis, affects organs.

In this stage, there are soft, non-cancerous growths called #gummas. If these gummas grow In your;

• Brain or nerves = Neurosyphilis.
• Heart = Heart failure
• Bone = Destructive bone disease
• Liver = Hepatitis

And so on!
In fact, #Neurosyphilis can make you have;

- frequent headaches
- numbness in your toes, feet
- confusion
- depression
- inability to walk well and
- poor sleep

In fact, you might even become blind & lack ability to control your urine like a little baby..
In males, syphilis can affect the tube that carries sperm from the testis outside (Syphilitic epididymitis)

If this occurs, your sperm tube might become swollen & blocked, leading to #infertility.

Syphilis can affect many other systems & organs especially if not treated.
The good news is that Syphilis can be treated with #penicillins at the right doses.

But you must ensure that your sexual partner(s) is/are also treated! Otherwise you can be re-infected.

Make sure you see your doctor together with your partner!
To prevent Syphilis, pls practices #SafeSex:

1. Use condoms
2. Don't share sex toys or needles
3. Use latex dental dam or condoms in oral sex
4. Screen for STIs & discuss results with your partner before sex.
5. If infected, see your doctor!

Syphilis is very common, so test for syphilis in your regular health checkup.

Get tested;
• RIGHT NOW if you have symptoms
• Once a year if you have a small number of sexual partners
• Once every 3 months if you have many sexual partners
If you test +ve to syphilis, I advise you to get tested for HIV and hepatitis also.

Studies have shown that having syphilis may increase your chances of getting other STI's like HIV and viral hepatitis.

HOW TO GIVE FIRST AID TO HOUSEHOLD POISONING VICTIMS

If you see someone poisoned with household items like bleach, fuel, kerosene, acid, drugs or fumes, you can give them this first aid to prevent death before arrival of medical help.

A thread 🧵

RT to save a life
Household poisoning is a common reason kids are taken to a hospital's accident and emergency.

As an adult, it's extremely crucial that you to know what to do from the time when you suspect someone is poisoned to the time medical care arrives.
So let's get started.

Once a person is poisoned by any substance, the first aid to give them depends on two major things;

• The type of poison, and
• Whether the poison is on their skin, eyes, inhaled or swallowed

ABNORMAL NIPPLE DISCHARGE

Some people don't breastfeed, but discharge milk from their nipples esp. when touched. This is called #galactorrhea!

On it's own, it's not a disease. But it could be a sign of an underlying disease that needs treatment.

Thread 🧵

RT for awareness
Have you seen someone who is not breastfeeding discharging milk from their nipples before?
Yeah, so #galactorrhea occurs mostly in women who have been pregnant before and are between 20 and 35 years.

But it can also happen in women of all ages, children and even men (yes, men can discharge breast milk from their tiny nipples too!😊)

Stop abusing steroids to build muscles.
Stop abusing steroids to enhance performance.

When your body is exposed to excess #steroids for a long time it can lead to Cushing's syndrome, a horrible condition.

A thread 🧵

Normally, Cushing's syndrome occurs when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone #cortisol for a long time.

But most steroid medications have the same effect on your body as cortisol.

So, when you take excess steroids over time, it can lead to Cushing's syndrome.
Cushing's syndrome can also occur when your body makes too much cortisol on its own (like in certain tumors of your pituitary gland or adrenal problems).

But taking or injecting steroid medications (exogenous steroids) is the single most common cause of this horrible condition. Image

Dear ladies, I heard some of you drink salt and water immediately after sex to "flush a man's sperm out of her system"! This can not prevent pregnancy.

There are better things to do, pls stop harming your body! 🤕

RT for awareness Image
Also, taking

• Cod liver oil tablets after sex
• Ginseng tea after sex
• Hot water baths after sex
• 4 to 5 paracetamol tablets after sex
• Andrews liver salt after sex
• Dry gin after sex

This is all rubbish. None can prevent pregnancy!
Most of these substances you take can go straight into your digestive system and hurt your body badly. Pls stop harming your body.

If you want to prevent a pregnancy after sex, use emergency contraceptives.

Guys, pls stop wearing tight #pants!

Tight underwears can keep your testicles closer to the body, causing warmer temperatures that may kill your sperm, lower sperm count & cause infertility.

Wear boxers instead, & go to bed naked if you want to become a father

Dear guys, your weight matters!

Being too fat may cause hormonal changes in your body leading to;
• low sperm count
• bad sperm quality &
• inability to make a woman pregnant

You can stop firing blank & weak by shedding your excess body fats

A thread 🧵

RT for awareness
Apart from low sperm count and poor sperm quality, obesity is a well-known cause of
• erectile dysfunction, and
• low sex drive.

Being overweight can damage your blood vessels and decrease the level of your male hormone #testosterone.
The damage caused to your blood vessels by obesity can come in different ways, e.g. due to the associated;

• high blood pressure
• diabetes
• excess cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
• excess triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia) and
• inflammation
