#Legend #story - Raja Varaguna Pandyan wanted to create a life-size Natarajar,so asked sculptor (Sthapathi)to do so in panchaloha metal.Despite his continuous efforts,sthapathi was unable to make a murti taller than 3 feet.Raja gave him some more time to work on Nataraja murthi
Raja warned Sculptor that if he did not accomplish the task,his head would be chopped off.As the deadline approached,worried & frantic head sthapathi prayed to Bhagwan Shiva for help.Sthapathi kept the next batch of molten metal ready to pour into the mold.
Shiva & Parvathi came to his house as an elderly couple & asked for little water to drink.Sculptor was engrossed in his work,out of frustration,told them to drink molten metal -Pancha lohak.They drank &
disappeared. In their place stood a beautiful Murthi of Natarajar &Sivakami.

Nataraja Murthy here looks more human than a mere vigraha.Later when raja & rani visited the place, they were astonished to see amazing Murthis. When Sthapathi narrated incident,Raja did not believe it.So he lifted his sword & made a cut on leg of the Murthi.
Blood poured out of the vigraha & some fell on raja himself.He was immediately afflicted with leprosy. He asked for forgiveness &prayed to Shiva for relief.The sword cut could be seen on the Natarajar Murthi even today.There is a mole on left arm &a scar on leg of Natarajar.
Stone inscriptions in this temple date back to Chola period - Raja Gandarathithan,his wife Sembian Mahadevi.
It is a very Simple temple without any Gopuram towers in the entrance - but has magnificent sculptures.
