Good news from a therapy point of view in our fight against #SARSCoV2. A novel compound called EIDD-2801 blocks SARS-CoV-2 transmission in ferrets.
One of the compound that both reduce the symptoms and the TRANSIMISSION. 1/n

How does it work? This small drug is a ribonucleoside analogue, meaning a small fake letter of the virus alphabet. Providing this fake letter blocks the machinery that allows viral replication, resulting in virus death. 2/n

Researcher infected several ferrets with Sars-Cov2, later they put them with healthy ferrets (in the same cage) with or without this new drug. 3/n

Update for DRUGS and TREATMENTS for #COVID19.
as today 8.12.20 only one drug is approved for covid19 treatment by FDA is the Remdesivir. 5 more treatments are EUA (emergency use approved) and me personally I added DEXA because of its efficacy. 1/n

Keep in mind that sometimes some drugs prove efficacy in trials but are not FDA approved for Covid treatment (and vice-versa). In the meantime more than 560 drugs are involved in trials at different stages. 2/n

Take home message: for the moment only one drug is approved to treat Covid19 but a lot of good candidates are on the pipelines, so there is hope!

I'm so bored and disgusted about the Italian debate around #COVIDー19 that I decided to do what I like the most. Explain science (at least, I try). Many people are concerned about new RNA vaccines. mRNA is produced out of DNA in the nucleus, (DNA is too precious to get out) 1/n

mRNA is exported outside the nucleus and once in the cytoplasm is transformed into protein by our cellular factories 'ribosomes'. Finally, protein can be secreted outside. 2/n

Moderna Vaccine is based on mRNA that enters in the cell (not in the nucleus), where is transformed in protein by our ribosome. Specifically is transformed in Spike protein that will be recognized and destroyed by our Immune system. 3/n

VACCINE FOR DUMMIES. Despite I noticed that my Twitter is full of VACCINOLOGIST I decided to make this extremely simple graphic to explain how the 3 main #vaccine platforms works.

The goal of a vaccine is to present the virus (or part of it) to our 'army' (the immune system). If our army recognizes the virus it can fight it.
1) easiest method is to provide the entire virus (dead or inactive)= classical vaccine (SINOVAC)

2)I present to my immune system only one part of the virus, something that charcterize it (hallmark) in this case spike. Here specifically is another virus carrying the spike protein used as a vector (DHL,Bartolini etc). (ASTRA)

GREAT news from the pharmacological point of view in the #Covid_19 fight! Small pre-print with huge potential!
The researcher showed that a small lipopeptide (a fat molecule bind to a small chain of AA) sprayed intranasally in ferret prevent Sars-CoV2 infection. 1/n

Infected ferrets were housed with healthy one for 20 days. Green dots represent ferrets treated with the lipopeptide, and the graph reports the viral load (classical PCR swab). This result indicates that the spray completely prevents Sars-CoV2 entrance. 2/n

As a matter of fact, ferrets treated with the spray didn't develop ANY antibodies. My PERSONAL view: this approach can be coupled with the vaccination to reach a complete protein against #SARS_CoV_2.

Facciamo il punto, da sempre siamo tutti d'accordo che l'unica arma che abbiamo contro il #COVID19 sia il 3T. In Italia è palese che le prime 2T(test tracing)siano fallite. Ci rimane la 3 T, il trattamento. Sappiamo che è la più facilmente saturabile(ICU, stress strutture) 1/n

e ci tengo a chiarire un punto. Sempre piu spesso parlando con la gente emerge l'idea che rispetto a marzo sappiamo curare molto meglio la malattia e abbiamo chissa quali ritrovati della medicina, purtoppo non è vero. 2/n

Dal punto di vista farmacologico abbiamo alcuni farmaci che se usati nella giusta finestra terapeutica aiutano un pochino. Per il resto ci sono protocolli medici ma nulla di risolutivo. 3/n
