During a global health pandemic, when journalism is more important than ever, governments around the world are imprisoning a record number of journalists, 274, dozens on #FakeNews charges, most on anti-state and terrorism charges & many without charges cpj.org/reports/2020/1…
This is the 5th consecutive year of record highs with #China #Turkey #Egypt and #SaudiArabia once again topping this ignoble list of the world's leading jailers of journalists. In Iran, 15 journalists were imprisoned on Dec 1, and on Dec 12 one of them #Roohollah_Zam was executed
Thirty-six journalists (13%) of those in prison are female. Some covered women’s rights in #Iran #SaudiArabia others while covering protests in #Belarus. Although women may be underrepresented among journalists in jail, they're overrepresented in experiencing online harassment.
One of the most important things I do in my job at @pressfreedom is advocate for the release of jailed journalists. This year's #FreeThePress campaign garnered 190+ partners & thousands of signatures calling for their release amid #COVID19 cpj.org/campaigns/free…
And these campaigns DO make a difference! Our @pressfreedom advocacy helped lead to the early release of at least 75 imprisoned journalists this year; @OneFreePress Coalition & #HoldTheLine can make sure these journalists under threat know we have their back

Yes a thousand times yes. I've gotten pushback from men (and women) because I started using Dr. In my email signature & on Twitter a couple years back. I spent 8 years earning a PhD, which meant passing 2 comprehensive field exams, learning Arabic, and writing a dissertation.
I spent years on the ground and helped pioneer virtual ethnography empirically researching the political impact of blogging & social media in Egypt beg. in 2006, contributing theoretical understanding of social movements, citizen journalism and technology. While working full time Image
My husband was actually the one who pushed me to lay claim in the public sphere to my hard earned title. And in an era of #FakeNews why wouldn't we make use of markers of expertise like this? Obviously not a fail safe and recognizing there are other forms of knowledge & expertise
