The most ridiculous article ever on #Cycling in #London appeared in the increasingly absurd Tory Weekly, The @spectator ... by Paul Burke. (@paulburkeradio) - an advertising copywriter.

And it's just so laughable it deserves a thread to debunk it's idiocy. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "Of course cycling is inherently right-wing"

He's not even trying to be ironic. He means it.

The 'Right Wing' can claim to ownership of many activities .. cycling is not one of them.

I have no data either way but my experience is that cyclists tend to be centre or left-ish. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Cyclists apparently "terrorise motorists with violently bright and flashing lights .."

Not ever seen this. Ever..

Perhaps he means legally safe, approved and recommended lighting, ideal for catching the attention distracted car drivers on their phones .... Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Cyclists apparently "terrorise motorists with violently bright and flashing lights .."

If he dislikes 'violently bright lights' perhaps he should campaign against the Xenon HID's increasing fitted to new cars.

No? Okay then. Thought not. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "Cycling is the exclusive preserve of the very few and the very able .."

This is where I started laughing.

Cycling is accessible to all, anyone who has a spare £20 to buy a clunker off eBay from kids to septagenarians.

It is the least ''exclusive'' of all modes of transport. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "As for cycle lanes, which pander to a tiny and privileged elite .."

Tiny ? A huge increase in cyclists and cycling miles since 2005.

Unprecedented since the 1930s.

"Privileged elite" ? .. it was at this point I realised he was serious ... or at least trying to be. ImageImageImageImage
@spectator @paulburkeradio "As I sailed down a wide and empty cycle lane .."

Ah, the increasingly heard 'empty cycle lane' argument. No, that won't wash either. It wasn't empty, Burke, by your own admission ... *you* were using it.
@spectator @paulburkeradio "As I sailed down a wide and empty cycle lane .."

Lots of roads are empty, too.

Perhaps we should dig them up .. or turn them into cycleways ? Now that's an idea.

Because a cycle way is empty at his chosen point of snapshot' does not an argument, make. ImageImageImageImage
@spectator @paulburkeradio Car drivers "squashed against their will into 50 per cent of the roads they paid for .."

I don't think it's against their will. I haven't asked them all, but I doubt it.

And they have quite a bit more than 50% of the road. ... Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Car drivers "squashed against their will into 50 per cent of the roads they paid for .."

Car drivers didn't pay for the roads - we all do, through general taxation.

Yes, even cyclists (of whom 65% own a car) (2019 data)

"They Don't Pay Road Tax" is a Myth busted since 1937. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Car drivers "gridlocked and trapped .."

Indeed.

Car ownership has doubled in the UK since 1990.

I think there's your answer, Paul. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Car drivers "might be teachers ... NHS workers ... firefighters ... paramedics."

They might indeed be. So might quite a few of the cyclists.

Regardless, getting stuck in traffic is actually the fault of, er, traffic. I.e. : Pretty much everything on the road except cyclists. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "And as we’ve all seen many times, cycle lanes lay largely empty."

So do many roads.

Oh, and some cycle lanes carry more traffic than the roads they run alongside.

Blackfriars Bridge is famous for it - 75% of the people crossing it at rush hour are on 2 wheels, not 4. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "During a 15-minute period on the Euston Road in London ... just seven cyclists used the cycle lane."

I went there this morning (in response to this piece) at 10.30am (not even rush hour) and checked.

I logged 83.

Perhaps Paul did his count at 3.00am, he doesn't say. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "more than 400 vehicles were crammed into what was left of their road space"

Euston Road had one lane, two in some sections. It now has .. still one lane, and two in some sections.

The lane(s) is/are just a bit narrower - and not by very much. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "If they were to measure the pollution, it will be infinitely worse than before cycle lanes were put there' .."

Burke quotes the opinion of Dorothea Hackman and calls it "Evidence, if any more were needed."

No, Burke, such a comment is not 'evidence'. #facepalm.
@spectator @paulburkeradio "astoundingly expensive cycle lanes? .."

As actual road closures are not generally required for construction, cycle lanes are considerably cheaper (and quicker) to build and maintain than the roads themselves - which are in fact, "astoundingly expensive", to use your words. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "Quite simply, not enough people want to cycle .."

*Cough* ... ImageImageImageImage
@spectator @paulburkeradio "Savvy cyclists avoid main roads. Their bicycles allow them to weave safely through parks and side streets .."

Indeed. Good job cycle lanes do just that. Track any of the Cycle Superhighways, and they go through those backstreets, parks and side streets when they can. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Cyclists "neither need nor want cycle lanes all over their cities."

Sadly I was not at the meeting where Burke was elected as a spokesperson (no pun intended) for cyclists, nor where he gets this data from. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Cyclists "neither need nor want cycle lanes all over their cities."

He most certainly does not speak for 'cyclists' - nor understand them.

I belong to five cycle clubs / groups and their collective view is : More cycle infrastructure, not less. Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio Cycle lanes are "privileges bestowed on an already fortunate elite .."

Ah, he comes back to this.

Well, as a cyclist (mostly a motorcyclist but often on unpowered two wheels ) I NEVER KNEW I was one of the *cough* "privileged elite".

I wish someone had told me earlier ... Image
@spectator @paulburkeradio "Our roads should be for the many, not the few .."

Actually, our roads should be for *all*. Says so in the Highway Code. Neither four wheels nor two has any absolute right to *all* the road. Cyclists just want enough of it to be safer. And it works. ImageImage
@spectator @paulburkeradio I've never, ever actually come across an article so full of busted myths, false claims and errant 'data' on cycling.

But then Burke's occupation is an advertising copywriter, so I suppose his day-job is creating lies.

Seeing as the 'Anti-Woke' lot (i.e. Lawrence Fox) think that the Vicar of Dibley is actually the Communist AntiChrist (or something) let's celebrate it with my 4 favourite Xmas moments from Dawn French and Emma Chanbers. Enjoy :-)

1 of 4 - 'The Sermon'

Very proud that ‘Bianchi Aficionado’ have featured my classic rebuilt Specialissimo on Instagram today and I did an interview a few days ago with an Italian Vintage Cycling magazine for next month’s issue.

Both amazed that I ride this 50-year-old piece of history every day.
@jdpoc ... and now to rebuild my other little bit of history, a late 1970s BMW R80, which I bought as a frame, a pair of wheels, a separate engine from a different bike, and four boxes of parts.
@jdpoc ... for £65, by the way :-)

#Brexit : Whatever Johnson's bluster today about 'continued negotiations' one thing is clear :

The EU's red lines (set in stone since 2016) are immutable.

The UK refuses to accept being locked into to the EU regulations.

To do so would be to effectively abandon Brexit. Image
The two positions are at odds, and neither will move.

The EU will not, for protection of the 27 ... and the UK will not, for it's isolationist ideology.

There is no chance of any such deal, be they to 'negotiate' until the 37th of Never, and thus, No Deal it will be. Image
This is the inevitable consequence of the UK carrying out a Brexit Referendum promising 37 different versions to multiple different groups of voters ...

... and then after 4 years not even being sure NOW which version of #Brexit the UK even wants. Image

Apparently a true story from Nebraska, USA.

A High School Principal gave every student - close to 500 of them - a blue balloon and told them to write their name on it them blow it up. They were then collected and dumped in this corridor.

At this point, the photo was taken.
He told the students to find their own balloon.

After a hour, only 19 of students had done so.

And it was complete chaos.
THEN he told the students to file into the corridor one by one, grab ANY balloon, head out to the car park and find the PERSON whose name was on the balloon.

After 23 minutes, every student had their balloon back.

USA : #Covidiot #NewYork Bar Owner refuses to close under State Law, fined, loses liquor licence, continues to open and serve alcohol, then as he's arrested he drives his car into a cop, causing serious injury.

24 hours later, he's out of jail.

#WhitePriviledge. Right there. Image
#NewYork #ProudBoys accounts monitored by NYAntiFa claiming he's "one of theirs" and "so is the arresting officer..."

A man of colour doing the same ? Using his Jeep to ram a cop ? Would never get bail, and *would* get a 10 stretch.

Cop is in hospital.

nypost.com/2020/12/06/si-… Image
Cop has broken legs - both - and was dragged for 300 feet.

Charge sheet : The accused drove into the officer "intentionally and with depraved indifference to human life”.

Sounds like attempted murder to most sane people.

Cost of Bail ? £0. Released on his own recognisance. Image

Received an interesting email today. This was the “header“ in my email inbox. If you saw this, you’d react instantly to it wouldn’t you?
@jdpoc Turns out of course it was just another begging letter from Republicans in America. I get these because I want to donated $1 to a #Trump PAC to see what they were posting out. Little did I know I’d end up getting 30 emails a day.
@jdpoc But what is interesting is the misrepresentation in the header, the suggestion that I have a “membership“ and indeed an “account number“.
