On a day that #China sentenced a citizen journalist to four years in prison for practicing a right enshrined in the Chinese constitution, all #EU member states reportedly agree to reach an investment agreement with #Beijing. scmp.com/news/china/dip…
One of the sources said an agreement could be reached as early as Tuesday. The move comes after EU negotiators said there had been “positive developments” on Beijing’s commitments on labour standards, one of the major sticking points.
“EU ambassadors have received an update by the [European] Commission on the current state of play on the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment,” an EU diplomat said.
“The commission reported on recent positive developments in the negotiations with China, including on labour standards. EU ambassadors broadly welcomed the latest progress in the EU-China talks.”
"The source said no delegation had “raised a stop sign”, meaning that the way for a political endorsement “was thus cleared”.
