Anyone else thinking about #immigrationcourt dates scheduled for for clients in 3 yrs and wondering if there will be a federal government to hear them by then, or is that just me
Fun times for someone who grew up believing as a matter of fact that the world would end in his lifetime!
I opened today's class on asylum/refugee policy by reminding everyone that there is no reason whatsoever to assume that the phrase "American refugees" is not something that we will come to know in our lifetimes. Any given country is just a couple of bad leaders/yrs away from it
Timothy Snyder talks about the "politics of inevitability," the presumption in many Western democracies that we will always be what we are because we are who we are. It's unhealthy & ultimately self-defeating, esp. once an empire is beyond a shared understanding of basic truth
Think how different the past four years might have been without one, a few, or even all of the following:

-a Democratically-controlled House
-honest state elections officials
-FOIA
-independent investigative journalists

Short of an actual military enemy, fascism can only mobilize through xenophobia. It's the most convenient source of the external threat fascism requires, the easiest way to transition the focus from the borders to imagined domestic threats.

Trump drew it all to the surface, but our post-truth/pre-fascist reality been coming my entire life. We are now all paying the price for everything from the Satanic Panic to Rush Limbaugh's dumbass "America Held Hostage" to Glenn Beck's crowded whiteboards to birtherism to QAnon
