"The emergency committee met this week and made a series of recommendations about the #COVID19 outbreak.
It will come as no surprise to you that variants and vaccines were heavily discussed as well as the current epidemiological situation"-@DrTedrosbit.ly/2XIpAxP
"Some countries in Europe, Africa and the Americas are seeing spikes in #COVID19 cases with multiple factors driving transmission risk. This is because we are collectively not succeeding at breaking the chains of transmission at the community level or within households"-@DrTedros
"We need to close the gap between intent and implementation at the country and individual level.
"With almost two million deaths, and new variants appearing in multiple countries, the emergency committee emphasized the need for governments to do all they can to curb infections through tried and tested public health measures"-@DrTedros#COVID19
"The more the #COVID19 virus is suppressed, the less opportunity it has to mutate. We need to be more efficient than the virus and reach excellence in everything we do"-@DrTedros
"There is only one way out of this storm & that is to share the tools we have and commit to use them together"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"The Committee called for upgrading national sequencing capacity so that as the virus changes, we can effectively monitor and respond to new challenges"-@DrTedros#COVID19bit.ly/2XIpAxP
"This is a defining moment in the pandemic and I was pleased that the emergency committee put a major emphasis on rolling out #COVID19 vaccines equitably"-@DrTedros#ACTogetherbit.ly/2XIpAxP
"#HealthWorkers are exhausted, health systems are stretched and we’re seeing supplies of oxygen run dangerously low in some countries.
Now is the time we must pull together as common humanity and rollout vaccines to health workers and those at highest risk"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"This is key to saving lives, protecting health systems and driving a fair recovery"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"We have also developed updated guidance about how to best protect people in long-term care facilities and recognize that if they are isolated it has a profoundly negative impact physically and mentally"-@DrTedrosbit.ly/3bCGN3Y#COVID19
"The guidance aims to prevent the #COVID19 virus from entering the facilities and ensure our loved ones remain safe"-@DrTedros
"I was really pleased to see refugees in #Jordan start to be vaccinated this week. I truly appreciate the approach taken by the Jordanian government to ensure that refugees are not left behind"-@DrTedros#COVID19#ACTogether
"It is critical this momentum on equitable #COVID19 vaccine rollout continues in the weeks ahead"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"I came into public health because I wanted to ensure that everyone everywhere has access to quality health services.
I know what it’s like to come from a continent where not all health services are available"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"When #AIDS drugs first rolled out, they were only available in rich countries until a historic movement of health advocates, civil society and manufacturers provided a rollout of low-cost antiretroviral drugs"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"In the H1N1 pandemic, by the time low-income countries received vaccine supply, the pandemic was over"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"#COVID19 vaccines are a major scientific breakthrough and I know through COVAX that we will distribute them a lot more effectively than in the past"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"We are working hard but we must all do more to ensure that vaccines reach those that need them most"-@DrTedros#COVID19#ACTogether
"I will keep repeating this over the coming weeks, because as I said on Monday, I want to see #COVID19 vaccination underway in every country in the next 100 days so that #healthworkers and those at high-risk are protected first"-@DrTedros#ACTogether

Statement on the 6th meeting of the International Health Regulations (2005) Emergency Committee on #COVID19 bit.ly/3ijPtO6
The Emergency Committee recommended that the #COVID19 pandemic continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
They also discussed the current epidemiology, emerging variants & vaccine rollout.
.@KuzmanovicA went for a walk with a friend 12 days ago. The day after, her friend was feeling unwell & tested positive for #COVID19.
To break the transmission chain, Aleks immediately quarantined. She has been teleworking since & will continue for 14 days, following WHO guidance
WHO recommends that people who are identified as contacts of people infected with the #COVID19 virus stay in quarantine for 14 days to limit interactions with others and potential onward spread.
Quarantine of contacts is the restriction of activities and/or the separation of persons who are not ill, but who have been exposed to a person infected with the #COVID19 virus.
The international team of 13 scientists examining the origins of the virus that causes #COVID19 arrived in Wuhan, #China, today.
The experts will begin their work immediately during the 2 weeks quarantine protocol for international travelers.
Two scientists are still in #Singapore completing tests for #COVID19. All team members had multiple negative PCR and antibody tests for COVID-19 in their home countries prior to traveling.
They were tested again in #Singapore and were all negative for PCR. But two members tested positive for IgM antibodies. They are being retested for both IgM and IgG antibodies.
More than 1,750 experts from 124 countries - convened by WHO - discussed critical knowledge gaps and research priorities for emerging variants of the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes #COVID19
Scientists noted the importance of research to detect and understand early on the potential impact of emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 on #COVID19 diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.
It is normal for viruses to mutate, but the more the SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads, the more opportunities it has to change. High levels of #COVID19 transmission mean that we should expect more variants to emerge.
WHO urges governments around the world to promote healthy food 🍎🥕🥛 in public facilities to prevent the 8⃣ million annual deaths currently caused by unhealthy diets.
"One year ago, the 1st death from #COVID19 was reported & WHO issued its 1st tranche of technical guidance. The comprehensive package included guidance on:
surveillance
lab testing
infection prevention & control
readiness checklist
risk comms & community engagement"-@DrTedros
"A year on, there have been almost 2 million deaths from the #COVID19 virus and while we are hopeful about the safe and effective vaccines that are being rolled out, we want to see this sped up and vaccines allocated equitably in the coming weeks"-@DrTedros#ACTogether
"In the past 12 months, the #COVID19 pandemic has taught us all many lessons. One of the most important is that the health of humans, animals and the planet that sustains us are intimately linked"-@DrTedros at the @oneplanetsummit
