Supreme Court to consider a petition filed by civil service aspirants seeking an extra attempt in the UPSC exams for those candidates who gave the last attempt in the latest exam held in 2020. @DoPTGoI
has stated no extra chance would be given
#SupremeCourt had told Centre that earlier too such extra attempt opportunities was granted by the government and that it should be seen if an exception could be carved out for the #UPSCaspirants
ASG Raju: 3,300 candidates will be appearing if extra attempt is granted. If age is concerned , 2,236 candidates is there.
Justice Khanwilkar: we will not go into age
ASG Raju shares a document with the bench detailing the candidates.
Justice Khanwilkar: In 1992 once you did it. This is not the first time then
Raju: That was because there was no preliminary exams. Whenever something new was introduced, rules were accordingly tweaked.
#SupremeCourt: It will only benefit 3300 students. It's only a one time thing. Out of this some students will be excluded because of age limits. How many will be age barred?
Raju: 130 candidates will be common. 2,236 candidates are age barred.
SC: without increasing age limit how many can benefit extra attempt?
ASG: 3,308 students will benefit
SC: so benefit only for these
Centre: They said they could not prepare for COVID19 pandemic. Paper 2 is qualifying exam. Only one paper is 200 marks. When person applies for the exam they know they have to prepare. They were given 8 months instead of 3 months. If you are not prepared then they can skip
SC: if you are not willing to accede then let us hear the petitioner first.
Senior Adv Shyam Divan: Please give us this chart which ASG showed. Please email it to us.
Hearing to resume at 2 pm.
Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta requests for an adjournment to Thursday so that the Centre can discuss the case and come back
SG: ofcourse we cannot seek time and do something irreversible
SC: We will not record it but don't notify this session rules till then
Supreme Court suggests adjournment to Friday
Senior Adv Divan: Friday can be an issue for me
SG: we are seeking adjournment as there may not be a need to trouble the court
